Sverre Bjertnæs (*1976 in Tønsberg) began his career as a student of the Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum (*1944), who was successfully committed to the style of the Old Masters. It was here that Bjertnæs devoted himself primarily to classical portraiture, developing the high technical level that distinguishes his paintings today. Over the next twenty years, references to classical painting and traditional Christian iconography would form his series of works. After two years under Nerdrum, Bjertnæs was accepted at the Oslo Academy of Art, where he remained true to his figurative style but also incorporated into his work new influences from the fertile surroundings of the academy. The exhibition Treasures presents selected works from the collection of Northern Norway Art Museum. Here we find paintings from the Baroque and Romantic eras alongside contemporary photographs and installations. The painting The Finding of Moses, recently identified as a work by the Roman artist Ludovico Gimigniani, from the latter half of the 1600s. The exhibition also includes works by 19th century artists such as Peder Balke and Eilif Peterssen, early modernists such as Thorvald Hellesen, Per Krohg and Rolf Nesch, and contemporary artists such as Jan Groth, Inger Johanne Grytting, Kjell Varvin and Per Christian Brown.00Exhibition: Nordnorsk kunstmuseum, Norway, Tromsø (20.02.2016 ? 29.05.2016).

Visionary Romantics
This exhibition catalogue brings together works by three Romantic artists: the Norwegians Peder Balke (1804?1887) and Lars Hertervig (1830?1902), and the Spaniard Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (1817?1870). Drawing a parallel between their respective landscapes, they show how these artists captured their inner visions of nature through experimental techniques that to an extent foreshadowed the loose manner of Impressionism and other modern painting movements.
