Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit den Erscheinungsformen der Dichotomie von „hoher“ und „niederer“ Literatur. Wenn Goethes Faust im japanischen Manga agiert oder Grimms Märchen verfilmt werden, handelt es sich um kulturelle und mediale Grenzüberschreitungen. Welchen Einfluss hat jedoch der Transfer in ein anderes Medium und/oder in einen anderen Kulturkreis auf die Wertung des betreffenden Werkes? Die Unterscheidung von Kanon und Unterhaltung scheint in nicht wenigen Fällen einer hybriden Vielfalt zu weichen. // The essays in this volume explore the ways in which the dichotomy between “highbrow” and “lowbrow” literature manifests itself. When Goethe’s Faust appears as an action figure in Japanese manga or Grimms’ fairytales are turned into films, cultural and media boundaries are inevitably, often strikingly, crossed. However, how does this adaptation into a different medium and/or a different cultural context affect the way the work in question is viewed? In not a few cases the difference between canonicity and entertainment is blurred, resulting in a variety of hybrid forms.

Anglo-German Linguistic Relations
This is a collection of papers presented at the conference «Anglo-German Linguistic Relations», held at Queen Mary, University of London in November 2007. The papers cover a wide variety of topics about the relationship between the English and German languages or relate to cultural and literary contacts between English-speaking and German-speaking regions. Individual papers discuss Anglo-German linguistic interplay and affinities both as contemporary phenomena and from a historical perspective. Themes include codification, translation and discourse production from the 17th century to the Second World War; shared metaphors in English and German; political propaganda in English and German; and authorial positioning and perspective in a selection of autobiographical and literary works.

Souveraineté et impuissance dans l'oeuvre de Robert Walser
L'oeuvre de Robert Walser (1878-1956) a déjà suscité nombre d'analyses critiques, et la résistance que les personnages opposent au monde qui les entoure a maintes fois été soulignée. Pour autant, le sujet est-il épuisé ? L'auteur de ce livre ne le pense pas. S'inspirant essentiellement de la théorie systémiste développée par le sociologue allemand Niklas Luhmann, il s'interroge sur les spécificités de cette «souveraineté» que la critique croit pouvoir discerner chez l'auteur suisse. Cette attitude, qui se manifeste dans l'univers du travail et dans les relations amoureuses, mais aussi dans le rapport de l'écrivain à l'écriture, ne se heurte-t-elle pas cependant à des limites et cet individualisme intransigeant ne fait-il pas surgir les risques de la solitude et du non-sens ? La théorie luhmannienne, qui conceptualise les rapports entre système psychique et système social et accorde une place privilégiée à l'examen des conditions nécessaires à une communication réussie, se révèle particulièrement apte à servir d'outil dans l'étude d'une oeuvre prise entre désir et refus de dire le monde et le moi.

Dialogues between Media
Comparative Literature is changing fast with methodologies, topics, and research interests emerging and remerging. The fifth volume of ICLA 2016 proceedings, Dialogues between Media, focuses on the current interest in inter-arts studies, as well as papers on comics studies, further testimony to the fact that comics have truly arrived in mainstream academic discourse. "Adaptation" is a key term for the studies presented in this volume; various articles discuss the adaptation of literary source texts in different target media - cinematic versions, comics adaptations, TV series, theatre, and opera. Essays on the interplay of media beyond adaptation further show many of the strands that are woven into dialogues between media, and thus the expanding range of comparative literature.
