A new, empathic approach to design research, drawn from the informed experiences of a leading design research program in Finland. Design, Empathy, Interpretation tells the story of empathic design, a design research program at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, that has developed an interpretive approach to design over the past twenty years. As one of the leaders of the Helsinki group, Ilpo Koskinen draws on his own experiences to offer readers a general intellectual and professional history of design research, and argues for what he calls an interpretive approach. Design, Empathy, Interpretation shows how the group has created connections all across the globe, and how a seemingly soft a...
A virtual memoir in letters by the beloved creator of the Moomins Tove Jansson’s works, even her famed Moomin books, fairly teem with letters of one kind or another, from messages bobbing in bottles to whole epistolary novels. Fortunately for her countless readers, her life was no different, unfolding as it did in the letters to family, friends, and lovers that make up this volume, a veritable autobiography over the course of six decades—and the only one Jansson ever wrote. And just as letters carry a weight of significance in Jansson’s writing, those she wrote throughout her life reflect the gravity of her circumstances, the depth of her thoughts and feelings, and the critical moments...
Rakkaus, kuolema ja muita kuvitelmia. Erkka Mykkäsen kynässä on jännä vire, absurdi ja lyyrinen. Aiheiksi hänelle käyvät yhtä hyvin maailmanloppu, ihana Krista Kosonen kuin pikkupojan intiimi hetki pöntöllä. Mykkäsen aikuisten satuihin kasautuu koko maailma: rakkaus, kuolema ja hämmentyneen ihmisen osa. "Krista Kosonen nousi, syöksyi miestä vastaan ja kietoi hänet syleilyynsä. Siihen lattialle he kävivät, sylikkäin, ja mies hautasi märät kasvonsa Kristan tummiin hiuksiin. Miehen mielessä häilähti suru, ettei hän pystynyt räästä tukkeutuneilla hajuaistimillaan tuntemaan Kristan tuoksua." Erkka Mykkänen (s. 1988) on helsinkiläinen kirjoittaja. Mykkäsen tekstejä on julkaistu lukuisissa lehdissä ja antologioissa, ja hän on sijoittunut J. H. Erkon kilpailussa palkinnoille niin runo- kuin proosasarjassakin. Mykkänen rakastaa stand up -komediaa, joka itkettää.

CineActive 1 on päiväkirjamainen kokoelma elävästi ja huumorilla kirjoitettuja elokuva-arvioita, joiden sisältö ja muoto poikkeaa monessa kohdin perinteisestä elokuvakritiikistä. Elokuvan itsensä ohella huomio kiinnittyy myös katsotun tallenteen tekniseen laatuun. Kirja aloittaa puhtaasti kotiteatterielämyksiin keskittyvän CineActive -elokuvapäiväkirjojen sarjan, jonka ensimmäisessä teoksessa kauhuelokuva on saanut suuren painoarvon.
An elderly caretaker at a large outdoor exhibition, called Art in Nature, finds that a couple have lingered on to bicker about the value of a picture; he has a surprising suggestion that will resolve both their row and his own ambivalence about the art market. A draughtsman's obsession with drawing locomotives provides a dark twist to a love story. A cartoonist takes over the work of a colleague who has suffered a nervous breakdown only to discover that his own sanity is in danger. In these witty, sharp, often disquieting stories, Tove Jansson reveals the fault-lines in our relationship with art, both as artists and as consumers. Obsession, ambition, and the discouragement of critics are all brought into focus in these wise and cautionary tales.
From a renowned artist and writer, a deeply personal nature journal about the island that informed her many works, with paintings from her longtime partner, artist Tuulikki “Tooti” Pietilä. In the bitter winds of autumn 1963, Tove Jansson, helped by Brunström, a maverick fisherman, raced to build a cabin on a treeless island in the Gulf of Finland. The island was Klovharun, where for thirty summers Tove and her beloved partner, the visual artist, Tuulikki “Tooti” Pietilä, lived, painted, and wrote, energized by the solitude and shifting seascapes. The island's flora, fauna, and weather patterns provided deep inspiration which can be seen reflected in all of Jansson's work, most fa...
The Web plays an increasingly important role in the communication strategies of political parties and movements, which increasingly utilize it for promoting ideas and ideologies as well as mobilization and campaigning strategies. This book explores the role of the Web for right-wing populist political parties and movements across Europe. Analyzing these groups’ discourses and practices of online communication, it shows how social media is used to spread ideas and mobilize supporters whilst also excluding constructed ‘others’ such as migrants, Muslims, women or LGBT persons. Expert contributors provide evidence of a shift in the strategies of mainstream parties as they also engage in ‘Internet populism’ and suggest ways that progressive movements can and do respond to counter these developments. Topics are explored using a cross-country analysis which does not neglect the particularities of the national contexts. This work will appeal to researchers and students working in the fields of media and communication studies, political theory, policy analysis, studies of populism, racism and nationalism, gender, LGBT, migration, Islam and welfare.
If you think about it, all languages are made up - some are just more open about it than others. In The Universal Translator, Yens Wahlgren heads up an expedition through time, space and multiple universes to explore the words that have built worlds. From the classic constructed languages of Star Trek and Tolkien to (literally) Orwellian Newspeak and pop-culture sensations such as Game of Thrones, The Witcher and The Mandalorian, this is your portal to over a hundred realms and lexicons – and perhaps the starting point to creating your own.
Kuvitusaarre vuosikymmenien takaa! Ennen julkaisematon Camilla Mickwitzin kuvakirja, jota siivittää Tuutikki Tolosen lumoava teksti. Hänen on lähdettävä katsomaan, miltä maailma näyttää. Prinsessa Marilii tulee vähä vähältä vanhemmaksi ja koko ajan enemmän prinsessaksi. Ja kaikki ihmeellinen tapahtuu ihan itsestään: kesät, talvet, myrskyt, lokit ja sateenkaaret. Camilla M...
