COVID-19 has pushed companies, schools, and healthcare institutions over the technology tipping point—and transformed the business of healthcare forever. This timely book, Global Digital Transformation Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, explores this transformation by looking at the adoption of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have proven effective in the medical context. These technologies are now being used to improve treatment efficiency, avoid the risk of false diagnosis, make therapeutic decisions, and predict the outcome of many clinical scenarios, especially the COVID-19 pandemic. The book begins with the fundamentals of comput...

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Pathophysiology, Epidemiology, Clinical Management and Public Health Response, Volume II (volume I.A)

Almost nine months since the first recorded case, the novel betacoronovirus; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has now passed 18 million confirmed cases. The multi-disciplinary work of researchers worldwide has provided a far deeper understanding of COVID-19 pathogenesis, clinical treatment and outcomes, lethality, disease-spread dynamics, period of infectivity, containment interventions, as well as providing a wealth of relevant epidemiological data. With 27 vaccines currently undergoing human trials, and countries worldwide continuing to battle case numbers, or prepare for resurgences, the need for efficient, high-quality pipelines for peer-reviewed research remains as crucial as ever.

Emerging Concepts in Bacterial Biofilms

Emerging Concepts in Bacterial Biofilms

The ability to form biofilms is a universal attribute of bacteria. Bacteria are able to grow on almost every surface, forming these architecturally complex communities. In biofilms, the cells grow in multicellular aggregates, encased in an extracellular matrix produced by the bacteria themselves. They impact humans in many ways, and can form in natural, medical and industrial settings. For example, the formation of biofilms on medical devices such as catheters or implants often results in difficult-to-treat chronic infections. This book focuses on emerging concepts in bacterial biofilm research, such as the different mechanisms of biofilm formation in Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, and the burden of biofilm associated infections. It also highlights the various anti-biofilm strategies that can be translated to curb biofilm-associated infections and the escalation of antimicrobial resistance determinants.

Veterinary Bacterial Zoonoses

Humans, animals and microorganisms all share the same planet, the last playing critical roles in the cycling of nitrogen and sulfur in nature and the degradation of organic materials. Unfortunately, micro-organismal populations also include infectious bacteria and viruses that cause diseases, with a few that have fatal consequences. We chose veterinary bacterial zoonoses as our Research Topic with the aim of delivering up-to-date scientific knowledge on the subject, addressing the topics of detection approaches, vaccine development and host immune response. Our Research Topic alludes to the One Health approach in addressing three important bacterial diseases, Brucella, Mycobacteria and Chlam...
