TRB’s National Cooperative Freight Research Program (NCFRP) Report 11: Truck Drayage Productivity Guide is designed to help improve drayage productivity and capacity while reducing emissions, costs, and port-area congestion at deepwater ports. The guide includes suggestions designed to help shippers, receivers, draymen, marine terminal operators, ocean carriers, and port authorities address inefficiencies, control costs, and reduce associated environmental impacts of truck drayage.
Experimental composite pavements were constructed at MnROAD in Minnesota and the University of California Pavement Research Center at Davis, where the pavements were instrumented and monitored under climate and heavy traffic loadings. A composite pavement consisting of HMA over jointed plain concrete also was constructed in the field by the Illinois Tollway north of Chicago. At the Tollway, extensive field surveys were performed on 64 sections of the two types of composite pavements. This project also evaluated, improved, and further validated applicable structural, climatic, material, and performance prediction models, and design algorithms that are included in the AASHTO MEPDG and DARWin-ME, CalME, NCHRP 1-41 reflection cracking, NCHRP 9-30A rutting, and the Lattice bonding model. ACRP report 47 explores issues associated with developing and leasing available airport land and summarizes best practices from the perspective of the airport sponsor. The guidebook includes a diverse set of case studies that show several approaches airports have taken to develop and lease property for both aeronautical uses and non-aeronautical uses. The project that developed the guidebook also produced two presentation templates designed to help airports in effective stakeholder communication regarding developing and leasing airport property. The templates, designed for a non-technical audience, provide content, examples, and definitions for a presentation to community stakeholders. The templates, one for aeronautical use development presentations, and the second for non-aeronautical use development presentations are available only online.
TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis 89: Public Participation Strategies for Transit documents the state-of-the-practice in terms of public participation strategies to inform and engage the public for transit-related activities.
"Reliability of transport, especially the ability to reach a destination within a certain amount of time, is a regular concern of travelers and shippers. The definition of reliability used in this research is how travel time varies over time. The variability can apply to the travel times observed over a road segment during a specific time slice (e.g., 3 to 6 p.m.) over a fairly long period of time, say a year. The variability can also pertain to the travel times of repeated trips made by a person or a truck between a given origin and destination. Agencies are increasingly aware of the issue of reliability, although the transportation industry as a whole as yet lacks a firm understanding of the causes and solutions to failures of reliability. As the agenda for the SHRP 2 research on travel time reliability took shape, it became clear a fundamental study was required to be able to talk about travel time reliability in a meaningful way"--Foreword.
This synthesis study is intended to provide airport operators, airport service providers, and utilities/infrastructure owners with ways in which information on subsurface utilities is collected, maintained, and used by airports, their consultants, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to increase the effectiveness of and enhance safety during infrastructure development programs at airports. It compares the current state of technology and effective processes from other industry sectors with what airports do today, allowing airports to consider areas for improvement. To gather relevant information on current practices, literature was reviewed and 16 airports were surveyed.
