With today’s digital technology, the image is no longer a stable representation of the world, but a programmable view of a database that is updated in real time. It no longer functions as a political and iconic representation, but plays a vital role in synchronic data-to-data relationships. It is not only part of a program, but it contains its own operating code: the image is a program in itself. Softimage aims to account for that new reality, taking readers on a journey that gradually undoes our unthinking reliance on the apparent solidity of the photographic image and building in its place an original and timely theorization of the digital image in all its complexity, one that promises to spark debate within the evolving fields of image studies and software studies.

Nothing about Dutch graphic design duo Mevis & van Deursen conforms to type. Praised for their innovative but clear presentation, they have designed everything from artist's books for Gabriel Orozco and Rineke Dijkstra to an official government stamp commemorating the marriage of Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, based on the number two, since the wedding date was 02-02-02. This book represents a range of work from the past 15 years, mostly books but also posters and smaller pieces. However, the artists have chosen not simply to present the work again but to make it new through collage and reinterpretative interplay, thus "recycling" their innovative design.
"DIY presents--in extremely dry and methodical detail--a plan for how to go into any IKEA store in the world and buy materials with which to build your own coffin. As is the case with all Do-It-Yourself projects, some basic skills and tools are required. Essentially, then, DIY is a shopping guide, a manifesto for how to get what you want from the world of commerce rather than accepting what it wants you to have, an epic tale about the transformation of mundane merchandise into a transcendental escape vehicle. DIY also features a guest appearance by AnnLee, a Japanese manga character originally owned and operated by French artists Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno"--Artist's website, July 5, 2017.

Ontelbare nummers werde...
