The Sinosphere and Beyond
The history of East Asia can be most productively studied through a transnational, translingual, and transcultural approach to the region. In The Sinosphere and Beyond, twenty-six leading and emerging scholars use such approaches in rich clusters of essays on Historiography, Sino-Japanese Encounters, Law and Justice, Politics, Art, Literature, and Translation. Each essay builds on the legacy of Joshua Fogel, whose scholarship defined the contours of the Sinosphere in the Western world and beyond. Japan’s Cultural Policy Toward China, 1918–1931
Most existing scholarship on Japan’s cultural policy toward modern China reflects the paradigm of cultural imperialism. In contrast, this study demonstrates that Japan—while motivated by pragmatic interests, international cultural rivalries, ethnocentrism, moralism, and idealism—was mindful of Chinese opinion and sought the cooperation of the Chinese government. Japanese policy stressed cultural communication and inclusiveness rather than cultural domination and exclusiveness and was part of Japan’s search for an East Asian cultural order led by Japan. China, however, was not a passive recipient and actively sought to redirect this policy to serve its national interests and aspirations. The author argues that it is time to move away from the framework of cultural imperialism toward one that recognizes the importance of cultural autonomy, internationalism, and transculturation.
Tombs and Transnational History in Greater China
This collection of case studies is concerned with tombs that testify to transnational history. Special attention is given to tombs of Westerners and Russians still extant in Greater China, but also to those of some noted Chinese who were involved in transnational history during the 20th century. Tombs have a special potential to cast familiar things in a new light. They also provide the possibility to counter-check received narratives which might have been tailored along certain vested interests and circulated with specific target groups in mind.
