After earning her Ph.D. from Columbia University, 26-year-old Paige Avalon accepts a position as an instruction at Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas. There she begins to work under the tutelage of septuagenarian Dr. Nathan Buchanan, a celebrated black historian, who is engaged on a special project. He is also gradually losing his sight. After inviting Paige to assist him and swearing her to secrecy about his health, he invites her to move into his spacious ranch home in order to work around the clock. She does, and that is where the trouble begins. “Around the clock” means only one thing to Buchanan’s nephew, Kyle, a lawyer and member of the state legislature, and when he comes to the house he is less than happy that a beautiful young woman is well entrenched in his uncle’s home. “Golddigger”is only one of the epithets he flings at her even though, as time passes, he realizes he is falling in love with her. Between Paige’s career and Kyle’s suspicions and the urgings of both their hearts lies a long road. Often it seems that neither of them will be able to travel the distance.
