This book presents the basic physical properties, structure, fabrication methods and applications of ferroelectric materials. These are widely used in various devices, such as piezoelectric/electrostrictive transducers and actuators, pyroelectric infrared detectors, optical integrated circuits, optical data storage, display devices, etc. The ferroelectric materials described in this book include a relatively complete list of practical and promising ferroelectric single crystals, bulk ceramics and thin films. Included are perovskite-type, lithium niobate, tungsten-bronze-type, water-soluable crystals and other inorganic materials, as well as organic ferroelectrics (polymers, liquid crystals, and composites). Basic concepts, principles and methods for the physical property characteristics of ferroelectric materials are introduced in the first two chapters for those readers new to the subject of ferroelectricity. Not only professional researchers and engineers but also students and other readers who have limited physical knowledge and an interest in ferroelectrics, will welcome this book.

A Collection of Articles on Physics and Others

This book is about Dr. Jin Tong Wang’s collected research works included: 1) Brillouin “Small Angle, Right Angle and Backscattering”. There were achieved three significances, a) smallest angle scattering in the world at that time. It was a world record; b) discovered from small angle, right angle and backscattering results, the sound velocity was not a constant with the same phonon mode. It actually depends on the phone frequencies. At that time, no one in this field didn’t know how to interpret it. Based on the results in the study, published a paper in Physical Review B in 1986; 2) By the support of Office of Naval Research, we created quite a few navel Ferro-piezoelectric material...

Focuses on the effects of porosity and microcracking on the physical properties of ceramics, particularly nominally single phase ceramics. The book elucidates the fundamental interrelationships determining the development and use of materials for actual and potential engineering needs. It aims to help in the understanding of porosity effects on other materials, from ceramic composties, cements and plasters to rocks, metals and polymers.;College or university bookshops may order five or more copies at a special student price, available on request.

This reference reveals the most significant technologies, procedures, and trends in the design and application of actuator devices for micromechatronic systems. It addresses critical design and manufacturing concepts, as well as challenges in the modeling and regulation of electromechanical losses and heat generation in actuator devices. Accompanied by a CD-ROM demonstrating examples of finite-element modeling and previously developed and commercially available actuators, Micromechatronics provides insight into the future of this evolving field, and considers recent developments in micropositioning technology and displacement transducer, motor, and ultrasonic motor applications.

"Interdisciplinarity" is perhaps the most used keyword in describing changes in current patterns of Federal funding. However, it is not a new idea - the interdisciplinary theme has been tried for over forty years. Yet, until now, involved or the performance has been. This book is the report on the "Interdisciplinarity Revisited: Materials Research as a Case Study" Conference, convened on August 31-September 1, 1999 at the Pennsylvania State University. The contributors included the world's leading practitioners in the field of interdisciplinary thrusts in other areas, from Science, Technology and Society to medicine, were represented by senior practitioners. The key findings include the foll...

Handbook of Solid State Batteries & Capacitors

Solid state power sources have developed remarkably in the last three decades owing to improvements in technology and a greater understanding of the underlying basic sciences. In particular, a greater impetus has recently been placed in developing and commercializing small, lightweight, and highly energetic solid state power sources driven by demands from portable consumer electronics, medical technology, sensors, and electric vehicles. This comprehensive handbook features contributions by forerunners in the field of solid state power source technology from universities, research organizations, and industry. It is directed at the physicist, chemist, materials scientist, electrochemist, elect...

Advanced Ceramics III

This volume is one in a series which attempts to bring together comprehensive articles on recent advances in ceramics. The volume is dedicated to Professor Shigeyuki Somiya on the occasion of his retirement from the Tokyo Institute of Technology; and it is a most fitting tribute. Professor Somiya has been one of the earliest and most persistent and versatile champions of research in ceramic materials in Japan. He has served this cause extraordinarily well by mixing two strategies. First, by making bridges to the entire international community of ceramic researchers in the US and Europe. Thereby, he kept a window for all of Japanese ceramic science on world class research in the field. It was...

Memorial Tributes

This is the fourteenth volume in the series of Memorial Tributes compiled by the National Academy of Engineering as a personal remembrance of the lives and outstanding achievements of its members and foreign associates. These volumes are intended to stand as an enduring record of the many contributions of engineers and engineering to the benefit of humankind. In most cases, the authors of the tributes are contemporaries or colleagues who had personal knowledge of the interests and the engineering accomplishments of the deceased.
