A Compact History of Latin America's Cold War

While not commonly centered in the Cold War story, Latin America was intensely affected by that historic conflict. In this book, available for the first time in English, Vanni Pettinà makes sense of the region’s diverse, complex political experiences of the Cold War era. Cross-fertilized by Latin American and Anglophone historiography, his account shifts from an overemphasis on U.S. interventions toward a comprehensive Latin American perspective. Connecting Cold War events to the region’s political polarizations, revolutionary mobilizations, draconian state repression, and brutal violence in almost every sphere, Pettinà demonstrates that Latin America’s Cold War was rarely cold. Cuba After the Cold War

Ten original essays by an international team of scholars specializing in Cuba, the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and Latin America focus on the fall of communism in Europe and the transition to a market economy. Major themes of this study are the impact of the USSR's collapse on Cuba, how the historic events in Europe have affected the Central and South American Left, their implications to Cuba, Cuba's policies for confronting the crisis, and potential scenarios for the political and economic transformation of Cuba.

Cuba

Lou Perez's Cuba has been a welcome addition to the Cuban history course since it first appeared. The Second Edition has solidified its place as the leading choice among teachers of modern Cuban history, and, based on events over the past nine years, the text has now been updated and revised. Perez has added new material covering the years from 1995 through 2004 in the chapter on Socialist Cuba (the last chapter). Further, the book ends with a political chronology, which has beenrevised and updated; the extensive bibliography been condensed where necessary (through elimination of outdated or superseded entries) and expanded to highlight the scholarship of the past decade (some of it by Perez himself). He has also condensed material in the body of the text where possible. The new edition features a slightly larger format and for the first time, photos in the text and the inclusion of two new maps. Sales of the previous editions have been extremely good, and there's every reason to think that a new Third edition will have an even more enthusiastic reception.
