In 2018, the members of the African Union adopted the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA). This book examines the AfCFTA, dissecting its key provisions. It stresses the importance of the AfCFTA in the context of increasing episodes of trade protection in Africa, and it theorizes on the role of the treaty organs. The book also examines the importance of citizen participation for the success of the AfCFTA, as well as exploring the role sub-state actors can play. Ultimately, the study adds to the understanding of the array of problems that are associated with regional trade in Africa and the role law plays in resolving these problems. It will be of importance to academics and students of international law, especially those with an interest in African trade law, as well as legal professionals and policymakers.

This book investigates the ways in which people in the Lake Chad region that divides Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon deal with the crises of violence, jihadism, drought, and climate change that continue to afflict the area. In 2014 Boko Haram expanded into the Lake Chad region, prompting a counter-insurgency response, and exacerbating pre-existing social and ecological challenges. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, this book investigates how people within the liminal space of this key border region respond to and navigate the unpredictability which typifies their day-to-day lives. Building up a picture of individual and community experiences of crisis, the book gradually demonstrates the complex interactions between economic circuits, political orders, socio-religious processes, and labour practices which operate in the region. Violent Islamic extremism is affecting a growing number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In some, jihadi Salafi organizations have established home bases and turned into permanent security challengers. However, other countries have managed to prevent the formation or curb the spread of homegrown jihadi Salafi organizations. In this book, Sebastian Elischer provides a comparative analysis of how different West and East African states have engaged with fundamentalist Muslim groups between the 1950s and today. In doing so, he establishes a causal link between state-imposed organizational gatekeepers in the Islamic sphere and the absence of homegrown jihadi Salafism. Illustrating that the contemporary manifestation of violent Islamic extremism in sub-Saharan Africa is an outcome of strategic political decisions that are deeply embedded in countries' autocratic pasts, he challenges conventional notions of statehood on the African continent, and provides new insight into the evolving relationships between secular and religious authority.

Est-elle seulement négative? Quelle diversité de processus sociaux et politiques se trouve derrière ce concept? Les biographies de personnes nous dévoilent les messages cachés dans ce genre de dynamiques. Y a-t-il au fond un désir de changement social? Mais alors que le feu brûlait au Nigeria, personne n'a trouvé bon au Cameroun ou ailleurs dans la sous-région de réagir. Les milliers de morts voisins du Nigeria n'empêchaient nullement les Camerounais de trouver le sommeil. Cela faisait partie des faits divers du Nigeria. Des news, comme on dit au Cameroun ! Il était choquant d'entendre certains Camerounais nous affirmer, avec fière allure, pendant notre enquête, que ce qui se passe au Nigeria n'arrivera pas au Cameroun parce que le Nigeria n'est pas le Cameroun, parce que le Cameroun, c'est le Cameroun ! (...). Pourtant, hormis cet orgueil exaspérant et cette naïveté enfantine sans pareille, les Camerounais, à la suite de leurs frères du Nigeria, allaient très vite faire l'amère expérience du terrorisme islamiste qui sévissait depuis des années chez le voisin nigérian. Il aura donc fallu que le feu brûle véritablement au Cameroun pour qu'on aille jusqu'à Paris, trouver la case à palabre, pour faire alliance avec les autres états voisins et dits frères, et déclarer enfin la guerre au terrorisme !
