This book outlines a new approach for considering the complex issue of hybridity and its translation. By building on the concept of translation as a three-phase process (reception, transfer and (re)production), it establishes the (contextual) function of hybrid elements in a text as the basis for translation or translation comparison based on a (focused) translation purpose. The model and methodology developed in the book provide the reader with operationalised tools for contextually abstracting the function of hybrid elements (Understanding Dimension) and using it as the basis for their transfer in another language (Translation Dimension).

From Cameroon to Turkey through Jordan, this short volume illuminates the discrepancy between stated language teaching norms and real-life language use in non-native settings. It underscores the limitations of teaching materials, styles, and methods with regard to learners’ communication needs, and provides well-matched answers to foreign language classroom problems. This book will be of interest to language teachers and researchers who will gain an insight into the challenges of the foreign language class in different non-native milieus, and therefore enrich their teaching competence. Descriptions of new varieties of European languages in postcolonial contexts have focused exceedingly on system-based indigenisation and variation. This volume–while further illustrating processes and instantiations of indigenisation at this level–incorporates investigations of sociolinguistic and pragmatic phenomena in daily social interaction–e.g. politeness, respect, compliment response, naming and address forms, and gender–through innovative analytic frameworks that view indigenisation from emic perspectives. Focusing on postcolonial Cameroon and using natural and questionnaire data, the book assesses the salience of linguistic and sociocultural hybridisation triggered by colonialism and, recently, globalisation in interaction in and across languages and cultures. The authors illustrate how the multilingual nature of the society and individuals’ multilingual repertoires shape patterns in the indigenisation and evolution of the ex-colonial languages, English and French, and Pidgin English.
Cette étude passe en revue les dialogues interculturels entre Occidentaux et Africains et entre Africains appartenant à des cultures ou groupes ethniques différents, tels qu’ils sont représentés dans les romans et films camerounais de la période coloniale et postcoloniale.
