The funtion of this book is to show familiar peasants "in position," as it were, neither frustrated idealists nor clowns, but human beings expressing the common human needs and feelings in the language inevitable to their circumstance ; their lives influenced, not so greatly by love as by work, their most axalted types reaching their highest articulation in religion. The "episode" is chosen as the behicle for the author's theme, as offering the simplest method of showing human people in contact. A group of country people is set within a spacious landscape, to them the boundary of their daily work. The episode occurs, and the group is suddenly and often violently rearranged, neither by circumstance nor by the caprice of some negligent deity, but by the shocks of character alone; and remains, within the same ample and untrouble background, the human appeal unchanged, but with an added element, it may be, of compassion.--Description on dust jacket.
