Late Reconstructions of Injured Ligaments of the Knee

Different views about the biomechanics of the knee joint and late re construction of ligamentous injuries underline the obstacles impeding the establishment of generally acceptable principles for the treat ment of such lesions. As late as June 1976, HUGHSTON emphasized in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery that in spite of excellent anatomic studies, substantial uncertainty still prevails in knee joint surgery. Even the signifi cance of the anterior drawer sign for ruptures of the anterior cru ciate ligament is interpreted quite diversely, as illustrated in a comparison of HUGHSTON, GIRGIS, TORG, and SCHIECK, who give varying opinions concerning the indication related to the age of the pa...

Treatment of Elbow Lesions

Because of the relatively low incidence of involvement efforts to enhance the diagnosis and management of elbow pathology are not common. Nonetheless, because of a rapidly expanding knowledge base, both with regard to a more - fined understanding of elbow pathology, coupled with exciting and emerging approaches and options for management, it is appropriate and timely to - dress this deficiency in the orthopedic literature. This volume, therefore, was produced in order to provide current and relevant information with content that is drawn from a very well received symposium of the same name as this book and convened in Modena, Italy recently. As with the symposium, the s- cific goals of this t...

Musculoskeletal Diseases 2021-2024

This open access book focuses on imaging of the musculoskeletal diseases. Over the last few years, there have been considerable advances in this area, driven by clinical as well as technological developments. The authors are all internationally renowned experts in their field. They are also excellent teachers, and provide didactically outstanding chapters. The book is disease-oriented and covers all relevant imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. Important aspects of pediatric imaging are also included. IDKD books are completely re-written every four years. As a result, they offer a comprehensive review of the state of the art in imaging. The book is clearly structured with learning objectives, abstracts, subheadings, tables and take-home points, supported by design elements to help readers easily navigate through the text. As an IDKD book, it is particularly valuable for general radiologists, radiology residents, and interventional radiologists who want to update their diagnostic knowledge, and for clinicians interested in imaging as it relates to their specialty.

Anatomy for problem solving in sports medicine: The Knee

When examining patients with sports-related and exercise-related injuries, a thorough knowledge of anatomy is vital in order to make an accurate diagnosis and work out an effective treatment plan. In this helpful, practical book, a professional anatomist, an orthopaedic surgeon and a sports physiotherapist have combined their expertise to give a detailed explanation of the structural and functional anatomy of the knee. The book includes descriptions and images of the relevant anatomy, and sample clinical problems (with model answers) throughout. Although each problem is different, practitioners will always follow a similar pattern in arriving at a differential diagnosis. In every case, four main areas need to be covered: the type of sport; the clinical history; physical assessment; and appropriate investigations. By taking a logical, step-by-step approach to solving clinical problems, this book offers a valuable resource for the wide range of health professionals who manage knee injuries.

Common Pediatric Knee Injuries

This book is designed as a practical and quick reference guide on the evaluation and management of common pediatric knee injuries for those who provide clinical care to children and adolescents, including pediatricians, family practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners, and trainees in these fields. It focuses on the important findings on evaluation and considerations for management of common knee injuries and is arranged in three general sections, as follows: general evaluation of the pediatric knee, specific injuries in the pediatric knee and injury prevention. Concise and practical, this book adds and improves on current academic offerings in the field, while providing an easy-to-read r...

Lateral Ankle Instability

This superbly illustrated, up-to-date reference textbook covers all aspects of ankle instability and its management. Readers will find extensive information on biomechanics, injury prevention, current strategies for conservative treatment, and established and emerging surgical techniques. The most recent procedures, particularly those which are minimally invasive and arthroscopically assisted, are described and discussed in depth. Detailed attention is also devoted to controversies such as the indications and timing for conservative or surgical treatment, the current and future roles of arthroscopy, the definition of “anatomic” repair, and the upcoming concept of “anatomic reconstruction” (replication of anatomy by using a graft). The book is published in cooperation with ESSKA, and the chapter authors include clinicians and scientists working in the field of foot and ankle orthopaedics and sports medicine from across the world. All who are involved in the care of patients suffering from ankle instability, including amateur and high-level athletes, will find Lateral Ankle Instability to be an excellent source of knowledge and a valuable aid to clinical practice.

The Knee

This new treatise is the most outstanding piece of work on the knee and its associated ligaments currently available. Never before have I seen such an extensive study of the biomechanics of the knee with such a comprehensive review of the literature. The first section of the book, which deals with the functional anatomy (structure and biomechanics), immediately alerts the reader to the necessity of understanding the natural develop ment and action of the related structures, clearly emphasizing that successful diagnosis and treatment cannot otherwise be expected; the many who want an easy standard approach to each classic problem may find this hard to accept. Study what Werner Muller has writ...

Knee ligament injuries are very common and are frequently sports related, although they may arise from trauma experienced during everyday activities. This book provides in-depth descriptions of the extra articular surgical techniques that may be employed when performing ligament reconstruction in patients with injuries involving the posterolateral and posteromedial corners of the knee. It is intended as a practical, “how to” manual that will be of value for both the trainee and the more experienced surgeon. Many of the techniques relate to the central pivot of the knee, i.e. the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. For each technique, indications, presurgical planning, postsurgical follow-up and complications are discussed in addition to the surgical details. Numerous tips and pearls are provided and the techniques are clearly depicted in informative high-quality illustrations.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries

In this new volume, Dr. Gregory Fanelli, of the Geisinger Medical Center and a reknowned expert on knee injuries, provides orthopaedic surgeons with an unprecedented review of the most recent and advanced knowledge needed to successfully diagnosis and treat PCL injuries. This comprehensive and practical volume covers everything from biomechanics and anatomy, evaluation and non-operative treatment to the latest surgical treatments of PCL injuries using arthroscopy, grafts and synthetic ligament substitutes. In addition, contributions from such well-known specialists as Drs. M. Malek, Roger Larson and Fred Flandery make this an essential text for every orthopaedic surgeon.

A knee injury should be diagnosed and treated quickly (in order to reduce the time of disability and the emergence of late complications). Dislocation of the knee joint (possible vascular damage; does not apply to the dislocation of the patella) and all open injuries warrant immediate referral. If several ligaments are involved and valgus or varus deformity can be produced with the knee extended, the patient needs to be referred quickly, perhaps on the following day.
