Jonathan Lasker: From Drawings and White Form Paintings

Jonathan Lasker's work is often considered bizarre, yet it is one of the most influential in contemporary abstract art. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when everything was in flux, when Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Color Field painting were no longer formally binding, Lasker succeeded like no one else in realizing themes such as referentiality, figuration, genuine materiality and corporeality, even aspects of the decorative and pictorial. The tastefully executed paintings and carefully crafted objects of the 1960s had reached the end of their days in terms of form; there was a recourse to styles and materials that not only served artists as art historical sources but as New Image painting, patterns, and decorations, and resulted in new artistic content. In short, abstraction as understood and applied by Jonathan Lasker had reached the postmodern age. This volume shows a series of beautiful preliminary studies of this process on paper, as well as large-format oil paintings from 1977 to 1981 that demonstrate their their radical pictorial implementation.

Urban Ethics as Research Agenda

This book provides an outline for a multidisciplinary research agenda into urban ethics and offers insights into the various ways urban ethics can be configured. It explores practices and discourses through which individuals, collectives and institutions determine which developments and projects may be favourable for dwellers and visitors traversing cities. Urban Ethics as Research Agenda widens the lens to include other actors apart from powerful individuals or institutions, paying special attention to activists or civil society organizations that express concerns about collective life. The chapters provide fresh perspectives addressing the various scales that converge in the urban. The uni...

Bicycles as a means of transport in cities are playing an ever more important role. The reasons are: reduction of motorcar traffic, sustainable traffic planning, reduction of noise and exhaust emissions, enhancement of the value of public space, healthier form of transport, savings potential in national health services and infrastructure expenditure. The book illustrates urban design ideas and architectural projects which go far beyond purely redesigning road layouts; its eight essays focus on the trend in urban design, landscape design, and traffic planning, it introduces nine exemplary bicycle traffic concepts in various cities (Barcelona, Copenhagen, New York, and Oslo amongst others), and presents 28 forward-looking individual bicycle infrastructure projects.

Industrially prefabricated objects dominate works by Birgit Werres, yet they enter into heterogeneous combinations with additional elements made by the artist. Birgit Werres finds her materials in warehouses and at industrial production sites, where she encounters the things that arouse her aesthetic interest, which has been fine-tuned for many years. She initially studied under Tony Cragg, before graduating from Irmin Kamp's class. Her rededication of profane figurativeness is carried out in sequences, stratifications, or composite materials. In such works, the artist continues to expand on formal characteristics such as volume, texture, and structure. The striking intrinsic color of the materials tends to be of great significance. In contrast to the monumental corporeality of the objects, it additionally obscures the origin, function, and properties of the material. Her unconventional sculptures and installations are quite often mentioned in reference to works by Robert Smithson, Barry Le Va, Richard Artschwager, and Richard Serra.

Dabei steh...

In her work, Katharina Hinsberg (* 1967, Professor at HbK Saarbrücken) focuses on a complex analysis of the genre of drawing, its historical, technical and spatial contexts. A typical approach for her is to incise the image carrier, as well as the cutting of lines within drawings. With her artist book, Hinsberg presents for the first time a series of interchangeably devised color drawings using 117 color pencils in horizontal lines on a grid. With each new sheet, a further color is added, grows, is reduced or disappears again, whereby the dense, colored hatching is dependent on the movement of her hand. Without spacing, lines and rows turn into color fields that continue and change from page to page. The underlying grid consists of 23 fields across and 30 lines high, each field measuring 5 x 5 mm. Katharina Hinsberg begins her sequence with black and ends in white.

"Amid the ascent of sustainability as a primary criterion in current architectural practice, the status of aesthetics has become a curiously fraught topic. Simply Design explores the tension between these criteria across five themed chapters: Revealing Place, Programming, Forming and Joining, Choreographing and Staging."--Publisher's website.

Gregor Hildebrandt (*1974) saw a photograph by Will Steacy, an American photographer who had created a series about pawnshops in the United States. The system of pawnshops in turn prompted Gregor Hildebrandt to play with the meaning and sense of the word pawnshop, i.e. to set up a shop in which chess pieces (pawns) were to be sold. When these are not directly connected to the game itself, he sees them and the shop itself as sculptures. For this purpose, he assembled the pawns in an installation covering the entire wall in evenly arranged rows of shelves, thus transposing them into a state dissociated from their purpose. With this artist's book, Gregor Hildebrandt further explores a wide vari...
