The sheer computing power of modern information technology is changing the face of research not just in science, technology and mathematics, but in humanities and cultural studies too. Recent decades have seen a major shift both in attitudes and deployment of computers, which are now vital and highly effective tools in disciplines where they were once viewed as elaborate typewriters. This revealing volume details the vast array of computing applications that researchers in the humanities now have recourse to, including the dissemination of scholarly information through virtual ‘co-laboratories’, data retrieval, and the modeling of complex processes that contribute to our natural and cult...
This book deals with the recording, modelling and visualization of cultural heritage (anthropogenic objects and natural scenes) and related processes. The areas discussed include data acquisition, using a variety of sensors (mainly optical sensors and laser scanners); platforms and mobile systems; data management and Spatial Information Systems; 3D modeling; and reconstruction, visualization and animation; Virtual and Augmented Reality, including innovative software and hardware systems; applications and interdisciplinary projects. A central focus is the development of methods for automated data processing. The aim of the workshop was to survey recent developments, trends, and new approaches...
In the past decade a range of formal spatial analysis methods has been developed for the study of human engagement, experience and socialisation within the built environment. Many, although not all, of these emanate from the fields of architectural and urban studies, and draw upon social theories of space that lay emphasis on the role of visibility, movement, and accessibility in the built environment. These approaches are now gaining in popularity among researchers of prehistoric and historic built spaces and are given increasingly more weight in the interpretation of past urban environments. Spatial Analysis and Social Spaces brings together contributions from specialists in archaeology, s...
Archaeoseismic research provides data and information on past earthquakes but is limited by the lack of ongoing discussions about methodology. This volume is an interdisciplinary approach including archaeologists, geologists, geophysicists, seismologists, engineers, and architects from different countries to present a comprehensive recording and interpretation of ancient natural disasters on some case studies. The publication is an introduction to various aspects of the field of archaeoseismology for the knowledge of past seismicity, the reconstruction of the chronological history of a place, the interpretation and identification of seismic effects using different methods, etc. The collection provides an overview of research into archaeoseismology, making new contributions through innovative ideas on various topics. The publication can be an illustrative introduction to better understand the complexity of interpreting seismic effects on ancient and modern masonries, particularly for students with an open mind. .
The first two sections of this book explore different ways of understanding seismic phenomena and present strategies for post-disaster management. Later sections present palaeoseimological and archaeological data (for the most part previously unpublished) on various sites in the Italian peninsula and the wider Mediterranean world and its frontiers.
The Court and Its Critics focuses on the disillusionment with courtliness, the derision of those who live at court, and the open hostility toward the court, themes common to Renaissance culture.
