The German-Jewish Dialogue

'I love the German character more than anything else in the world, and my breast is an archive of German song' So wrote Heinrich Heine in 1824, adding: 'It is likely that my Muse gave her German dress something of a foreign cut from annoyance with the German character'. Here Heine sums up the ambivalent emotions of Jews who felt at home in German culture and yet, even in the age of emancipation, foundGermany less than welcoming. This anthology illustrates the history of Jews in Germany from the eighteenth century, when it was first proposed to give Jews civil rights, to the 1990's and the problems of living after the Holocaust. The texts include short stories, plays, poems, essays, letters a...

Schubert

Of all the great composers, none - not even Mozart - has been so dogged by myth and misunderstanding as Franz Schubert. The notion of Schubert as a pudgy, lovelorn Bohemian schwammerl (mushroom) scribbling tunes on the back of menus in idle moments has never quite been eradicated. In this major new biography, Brian Newbould balances discussion of Schubert's compositions with an exploration of biographical influences that shaped his musical aesthetics. Schubert: The Music and the Man offers an eminently readable description of a musician who was compulsively dedicated to his art - a composer so prolific that he produced over a thousand works in eighteen years. Gifted with an intuitive know-ho...

Friedrich Schiller and Swabian Pietism

Friedrich Schiller and Swabian Pietism

This is a comprehensive study of the influence of Swabian Pietism on the early life and works of Friedrich Schiller. Besides integrating earlier research on the subject, the author has also sought out those documents of Pietism in Wurttemberg which were widely known and/or were in the possession of the Schiller family. Through a comparison with Schiller's own words striking similarities, if not always direct influences, are demonstrated. This is also the first study to explore the possible connections between Schiller's thought and the ideas of Friedrich Christoph Oetinger. Evidence is also presented that, in spite of Kant's later influence on Schiller, his mature philosophy is firmly rooted in the theology of Swabian Pietism."
