La empresa de comunicación fue, junto a los poderes políticos y económicos, uno de los verdugos al ideal del periodismo, la libertad de expresión. La propiedad de los medios estuvo ligado a las críticas de la manipulación de la opinión pública ante los intereses generados por parte de quienes asumen esta propiedad.
En las últimas décadas hemos observado el drástico cambio que se ha producido en la manera de comunicarnos y el modo mediante el que accedemos a la información. En 1995 Nicholas Negroponte, en su obra El mundo digital, auguraba que caminábamos hacia una sociedad en la que estaríamos conectados en todo momento con todo el mundo.
