Looking for an answer of social science: being able to maintain political independence; without loosing genuine political orientation and responsibility; and at the same time maintaining a sophisticated balance of holistic orientation on the one side and discrimination on the other side is, of course, on the one hand bound to the objective conditions of society; on the other hand -- and even more so -- scientists have to accept their responsibility of (re-)gaining independence in terms of looking for valid answers to assess development and to change them where necessary rather than fulfilling 'expectations of the development' by simply maintaining the status quo. In this regard, the present contributions reach a high level of expertise in their independence of judgements. This is of particular interest, as they cover a huge variety of topics and areas, not least coming from different disciplinary backgrounds and as well looking at different aggregate levels.
Welfare societies are confronted with a new social quest: the problem of increasing numbers of people having difficulties in coping with daily complexity and the dramatic increase in users in youth care, mental health and the punitive system. The answer to this new social issue is not a Caring State but an Activating State. The new social quest asks for a new concept of citizenship on the one hand and a new social professional as 'generalist-specialist' or'professional friend', on the other hand. From there, different modern approaches in social work are presented, such as outreach social work, new avenues for reducing recidivism, making room for vulnerable people in the community, interethnic connecting in sports, good social care and a new profile for social workers.
This book originates in the work of a Socrates European partnership on mental health promotion. The project involved partners from four European countries (the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal and Ireland) and led to the development of a European Module on mental health promotion in each country, teaching exchanges and a series of conferences in the UK (2001), Ireland (2002) and Italy (2003). However, this book moves beyond the publication of conference proceedings to provide a broader debate on responses to mental distress that promote inclusion, citizenship (as expression of meaningful participation in the community) and a genuine alternative to institutional thinking and practices.
The book reflects with heterogenous contributions - one presenting purely theoretical reflections, the other two looking more focussed on the empirical side: in Hungary and Russia - on precarity. It is of some special significance that the empirical contributions are not looking at the countries of the traditional core of capitalism. Together, the contributions aim on enhancing the debate on precarity, with their special significance that they go beyond the standard deviations. This opens in particular in theoretical perspective an outlook that pushes thinking beyond the drive of reestablishing normalities of a supposed past welfare glory.
Beyond hegemonic thoughts, the Post-Western sociology enables a new dialogue between East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) and Europe on common and local knowledge to consider theoretical continuities and discontinuities, to develop transnational methodological spaces, and co-produce creolized concepts. With this new paradigm in social sciences we introduce the multiplication of epistemic autonomies vis-à-vis Western hegemony and new theoretical assemblages between East-Asia and European sociologies. From this ecology of knowledge this groundbreaking contribution is to coproduce a post-Western space in a cross-pollination process where “Western” and “non-Western” knowledge do interact, articulated through cosmovisions, as well as to coproduce transnational fieldwork practices.
The guiding question of this work is the following: In which way, if at all, can we define a framework that allows a comparative view on social professional activity in an international perspective? Going beyond positivist research usually means to look for qualitative standards, however remaining caught by taking individual professions in a national setting from one country for granted and looking from what we know for 'counterparts' and/or 'partners' in other countries. The book aims at presenting an updated version of the basic and general human rights debates. While it is frequently suggested that Human Rights are universal and indivisible, it is an undeniable fact that this is far from being true. And if there was ever any justification for talking about an ending to history, that narrative has definitely lost all justification in the light of recent developments. In fact, we are now witnessing a new harsh round of global system competition, often at the edge of a global hot war, now not anymore in a bipolar world but in a multipolar setting.The book contributions include reflections on history and theory, the reinterpretation of rights in different national contexts and/or in relation to specific groups (e.g. women) and areas (e.g. digitization).The book is meant to be a food for thought, at the end arguing in favour of the need to redefine Human Rights, reflecting the changes since the inauguration of the UDHR.
