Collective Violence and Memory in the Ancient Mediterranean
This book reveals how violent pasts were constructed by ancient Mediterranean societies, the ideologies they served, and the socio-political processes and institutions they facilitated. Combining case studies from Anatolia, Egypt, Greece, Israel/Judah, and Rome, it moves beyond essentialist dichotomies such as “victors” and “vanquished” to offer a new paradigm for studying representations of past violence across diverse media, from funerary texts to literary works, chronicles, monumental reliefs, and other material artefacts such as ruins. It thus paves the way for a new comparative approach to the study of collective violence in the ancient world.
Forgery Beyond Deceit
What do forgeries do? Forgery Beyond Deceit: Fabrication, Value, and the Desire for Ancient Rome explores that question with a focus on forgery in ancient Rome and of ancient Rome. Its chapters reach from antiquity to the twentieth century and cover literature and art, the two areas thatpredominate in forgery studies, as well as the forgery of physical books, coins, and religious relics. The book examines the cultural, historical, and rhetorical functions of forgery that extend beyond the desire to deceive and profit. It analyses forgery in connection with related phenomena likepseudepigraphy, fakes, and copies; and it investigates the aesthetic and historical value that forgeries possess when scholarship takes seriously their form, content, and varied uses within and across cultures. Of particular interest is the way that forgeries embody a desire for the ancient and forthe recovery of the fragmentary past of ancient Rome.
On the Agora
On the Agora traces the evolution of the main public square of the Greek polis for the six centuries from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the height of the Roman Empire and the Herulian invasion of Greece in 267 AD. Drawing on literary, epigraphic and, especially, archaeological evidence, the book takes a comparative approach to consider how the layout and function of agoras in cities throughout Greece changed during centuries that witnessed far reaching transformations in culture, society and political life. The book challenges the popular view of the post-Classical agora as characterised by decline, makes important arguments about how we use evidence to understand ancient public spaces and proposes many new interpretations of individual sites.

Chr. bis 11. Jh. n. Chr. gleichgewichtig gegenübergestellt. An einer repräsentativen Auswahl von über 40 Exponaten und den dazugehörigen Schriftquellen diskutiert die Ausstellung wichtige Probleme von Text und Skulptur und leistet auf diese Weise einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der antiken Plastik. Unter anderem wird den Fragen nachgegangen, worauf die Benennung einer Statue, ihre Zuschreibung an einen Künstler und ihre Datierung basieren. Der Katalog ist im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Projekts entstanden, das zur Aufgabe hat, das veraltete Standardwerk von Johannes Overbeck, Die antiken Schriftquellen zur Geschichte der bildenden Künste bei den Griechen (1868), zu ersetzen und mittels Übersetzung, philologisch-epigraphischem und archäologischem Kommentar, Literaturnachweisen und Abbildungen den aktuellen Bedürfnissen anzupassen. Der "Neue Overbeck" wird 2009 in vier Bänden bei Walter de Gruyter erscheinen.
Horacio Cifuentes
Born in Colombia, South America, Horacio Cifuentes attended various dance academies in Spain, Poland and the United States. Among them, the prestigious American Balet Theatre School and the San Francisco Ballet School. Michael Smuin, director of the San Fransisco Ballet discovered Horacio and featured him in various key roles in the dance company, where he also worked with international choreographers such as Jiry Kylian, Robert North and Arthur Mitchell. Horacio was inspired by American bellydance pioneer Magana Baptiste to become an oriental dancer. Under her guidance he followed extensive studies into the mystical world of yoga, spiritual dance and belly dance. His story is full of fascinating anecdotes, humor, tragedy and brings with it a profound spiritual depth. Horacio Cifuentes resides in Berlin, Germany, where he co-directs a dance academy with his wife and dance partner, Beata Cifuentes.
