Touchdowns for Jesus and Other Signs of Apocalypse

Why do sports matter so much to so many people? And why should we care? Far from being a distraction or a trivial pastime, sports tell us deep truths about ourselves. Big-time sports are a particularly potent mirror for humanity--reflecting both our promising possibilities and our demonic distortions. Theologian (and football coach's wife) Marcia Mount Shoop invites you to take a closer look at the hold that sports have on us. Touchdowns for Jesus takes you beneath the veil in some of the most challenging issues in sports today: fanaticism, sexism, racism, and abuse of power. And beneath the lifted veil you also encounter wisdom about how we can find our way back to what is most life-giving about sports. If you love sports, or if you just wonder why others do, Touchdowns for Jesus will give you a whole new way to view the games people play. .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }

The election of Donald Trump and the great disruption in the news and social media. Donald Trump's election as the 45th President of the United States came as something of a surprise—to many analysts, journalists, and voters. The New York Times's The Upshot gave Hillary Clinton an 85 percent chance of winning the White House even as the returns began to come in. What happened? And what role did the news and social media play in the election? In Trump and the Media, journalism and technology experts grapple with these questions in a series of short, thought-provoking essays. Considering the disruption of the media landscape, the disconnect between many voters and the established news outlet...

The Obama Presidency in the Constitutional Order

The Obama administration is shaping up to be one of the most consequential in recent American history. In this book, a diverse group of presidential scholars step back from the partisan debate to consider the first two years of the Obama presidency through the lens of the U.S. constitution's theory, structure, and powers. They ask how Barack Obama understands and exercises the President's formal constitutional and informal powers and responsibilities of the president, from foreign policy and public policyto his political leadership of the Democratic party and the nation as a whole.

The Gascony Letters

The Darkest of Tidings Can Lead to the Greatest of Triumphs Banished from his beloved London in 1303, Gregory of Bordeaux heads to Gascony, the old wine duchy in southwest France, to wait out his expulsion. Far from idle, he is burdened with tasks that if completed, enable a triumphal return home, where his wife and infant twins await. Out into the hills he rides, the cities and castles, the vineyards and wastelands, each stop a step closer to the tidy merchant’s life he’d left behind. Smoldering among the writs and letters tucked in his satchel is an arrest warrant, one he must serve on an outlawed traitor to the king. Safe within the walls of his bleak stronghold, Alphonse of Bayonneâ€...

Since the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, I have posted numerous essays and other commentaries on Facebook. They are of varying length on matters of politics, international affairs, history, law and justice, science, journalism, education, psychology, health, humor and personal matters. In adding up all the posts over 10 books, including those I repeated because of their timeliness, I have posted more than 1,000 separate essays, commentaries, notes, etc., all taken together as social media musings. As I’ve said throughout this series of books, I believe in an informed citizenry that relies on facts, logic, critical thinking, and reasoned judgment. At a time when too many people rely too heavily on social media and the misinformation from those sources; at a time when anger and rage too often replace common sense and critical thinking, it is hoped that the essays and social commentaries in this series of books on social media musings will inspire dialogue and further citizen involvement in their communities.
