Sleep problems are ubiquitous in the modern world, significantly impacting on quality of life, mental health, and performance at work and at home. More significantly, sleep problems accompany almost every mental health condition and are a significant driver in the development and maintenance of poor mental health. This book describes the current state of knowledge on the science of sleep, covering the various forms of insomnia and parasomnia that abound, before discussing the variety of assessment and treatment options available to the healthcare practitioner. Further discussion of psychological and behavioural interventions is made with particular reference to a new, second-generation Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia, how this is an effective treatment modality, and how it can be applied with clients presenting with more complex physical and mental health conditions. The final chapter presents the range of theories as to the purpose and function of dreams and dreaming, and how 'dream-work' has been applied in the therapeutic setting.

First Published in 1983. Designed for first-year graduates, this book provides an introduction to key themes and research in sociology. Written by two lecturers and based on the long experience of teaching the subject, 'The Problem of Sociology' serves as an antidote to the conventional 'institutional' approach to sociology and avoids he artificial fragmentation of major theories and concepts in common to so many introductory texts. From this text, the student is able to develop a clear understanding of what makes sociology a distinct and rigorous discipline; a discipline which has evolved historically through the analysis of certain fundamental issues, many of which continue to have a contemporary relevance. And while introducing the student to classical theory, the authors also show how these theories illuminate present social problems.

The Psychology of an Art Writer

  • Categories: Art

An openly lesbian, feminist writer, Vernon Lee—a pseudonym of Violet Paget—is the most important female aesthetician to come out of nineteenth century England. Though she was widely known for her supernatural fictions, Lee hasn’t gained the recognition she so clearly deserves for her contributions in the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of empathy, and art criticism. An early follower of Walter Pater, her work is characterized by extreme attention to her own responses to artworks, and a level of psychological sensitivity rarely seen in any aesthetic writing. Today, she is largely overlooked in curriculums, her aesthetic works long out of print. David Zwirner Books is reintroducing Leeâ...

The effects of language use in the digital world can be seen in every aspect of language study, and new ways of researching the field are needed. In this book the authors look at language online from a variety of perspectives, providing a solid theoretical grounding, an outline of key concepts, and practical guidance on doing research. Chapters cover topical issues including the relation between online language and multilingualism, identity, education and multimodality, then conclude by looking at how to carry out research into online language use. Throughout the book many examples are given, from a variety of digital platforms, and a number of different languages, including Chinese and English. Written in a clear and accessible style, this is a vital read for anyone new to studying online language and an essential textbook for undergraduates and postgraduates working in the areas of new media, literacy and multimodality within language and linguistics courses.
