Holy Organ or Unholy Idol? focuses on the significance of the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its accompanying imagery in eighteenth-century New Spain. Lauren G. Kilroy-Ewbank considers paintings, prints, devotional texts, and archival sources within the Mexican context alongside issues and debates occurring in Europe to situate the New Spanish cult within local and global developments. She examines the iconography of these religious images and frames them within broader socio-political and religious discourses related to the Eucharist, the sun, the Jesuits, scientific and anatomical ideas, and mysticism. Images of the Heart helped to champion the cult’s validity as it was attacked by religious reformers.

"There is astonishingly little literature in English on painting in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Published in association with the Cantor Center for Visual Arts, this exhibition catalogue explores a little known aspect of the history of art that is increasingly appreciated for its energy and originality. Although the initial impetus for paintings in South America was provided by artists who came from Europe, they were soon outnumbered by natives who become proficient in decorating churches and public buildings. The 56 paintings--never previously published--in the Thoma Collection offer an accurate and compelling survey of the diverse schools of painting that developed in the vast regions of the Viceroyalty which yielded the present day countries of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina."--Publisher description.

Guadalupe

"Major edition that includes the collaboration of renowned art and history experts presenting the history of the Colegiata of Guadalupe of the Mexican Basilica, through the origin and history of the 17th century stalls of the chairs that decorated the choir, examining the historic conditions that transformed the Tepeyac sanctuary in to a collegiate church. First volume is dedicated to the history and political, social and historic context around the cult to the Virgin and second presents a catalogue of the hand-carved choir chairs that were taken apart until they disappeared as a whole in the early 20th century. The surviving carved chair backs represent passages of the miracle of the Virgin of Guadalupe inspired in the prints by Matias de Arteaga y Alfaro (b. Spain 1633-1703) that illustrate the 1685 Spanish edition of "Felicidad de Mexico." At present the stalls of the choir are demounted and the fragments are not organized in time, space or conformation. The book accompanies an homonymous exhibition celebrating the Jubilar Year of the Virgin of Guadalupe"--Provided by vendor.
