The Making of the Modern Body
Scholars have only recently discovered that the human body itself has a history. Not only has it been perceived, interpreted, and represented differently in different epochs, but it has also been lived differently, brought into being within widely dissimilar material cultures, subjected to various technologies and means of control, and incorporated into different rhythms of production and consumption, pleasure and pain. The eight articles in this volume support, supplement, and explore the significance of these insights. They belong to a new historical endeavor that derives partly from the crossing of historical with anthropological investigations, partly from social historians' deepening interest in culture, partly from the thematization of the body in modern philosophy (especially phenomenology), and partly from the emphasis on gender, sexuality, and women's history that large numbers of feminist scholars have brought to all disciplines.
Ladies' Dispensatory
Leonard Sowerby's self-healing manual for women, The Ladies' Dispensatory, emerged in England in 1652 amidst an abundance of medical self-help books for the lay citizen. Written for both the common patient and the amateur health provider, these manuals of home remedies provided their readers with a variety of potential solutions to common ailments or disease. Sowerby's Dispensatory was written primarily for curing women's health problems, and in that regard, focuses heavily on gynecologic problems (the Dispensatory includes numerous preparations for inducing abortion), breast complaints, personal hygiene and cosmetic applications. Balaban, Erlen and Siderits have resurrected Sowerby's original manuscript and have provided both historical and medical explanation of its uses and usefulness. From a common garlic remedy to 'fortify the brain' to 'a hog's heel, burned to powder' for easing colic, The Ladies' Dispensatory is a delightfully unique look at health and hygiene in the seventeenth century. Making babies was a mysterious process in early modern England. Mary Fissell employs a wealth of popular sources - ballads, jokes, witchcraft pamphlets, Prayer Books, popular medical manuals - to produce the first account of women's reproductive bodies in early-modern cheap print. Since little was certain about the mysteries of reproduction, the topic lent itself to a rich array of theories. Garden of Herbs
Eleanour Rohde was a well-known gardener and garden historian with a passion for herbs and herb gardens. In this 1922 book, Rohde provides readers with a complete, yet concise, guide to herbs--from creating an herb garden to using the herbs in various recipes including teas, syrups, conserves, pies, wines, waters, and perfumes. As well as illustrations of historic herbal knot gardens, the volume also contains interesting bits of herbal lore from throughout the ages. Recipe books are a key part of food history; they register the ideals and practices of domestic work, physical health and sustenance and they are at the heart of material culture as it was experienced by early modern Englishwomen. In a world in which daily sustenance and physical health were primarily women's responsibilities, women were central to these texts that record what was both a traditional art and new science. The texts reprinted in these two volumes allow readers to reconstruct the history of recipes, both medical and culinary, from the mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century, and situate that history within the larger scientific and intellectual practices of the period.
