Back cover: "De Nederlandse schilderkunst van de zeventiende eeuw blijft fascineren. De Tachtigjarige Oorlog maakte dat mensen in grote groepen van Zuid- naar Noord-Nederland trokken. De bevolking van de Noord-Nederlandse steden groeide explosief, het aantal schilders verveelvoudigde zich en de productie moet enorm zijn geweest. Kunnen we tot een beter begrip van de stormachtige ontwikkeling van de schilderkunst komen? Het beroep was gebonden aan de regels van het gilde, de leerling werd in het vak opgeleid en er moeten beroepsgeheimen hebben gegolden. Toch is er hier en daar over geschreven.
