Prairie Metropolis

At the turn of the twentieth century, Winnipeg was the fastest-growing city in North America. But its days as a diverse and culturally rich metropolis did not end when the boom collapsed. Prairie Metropolis brings together some of the best new graduate research on the history of Winnipeg and makes a groundbreaking contribution to the history of the city between 1900 and the 1980s. The essays in this collection explore the development of social institutions such as the city’s police force, juvenile court, health care institutions, volunteer organizations, and cultural centres. They offer critical analyses on ethnic, gender, and class inequality and conflict, while placing Winnipeg’s experiences in national and international contexts.

Broken Country

An “evocative, sensitive, and compelling novel” (Delia Owens, New York Times bestselling author of Where the Crawdads Sing) that explores the deadly consequences of a love triangle in an English farming village as dangerous secrets from the past resurface—perfect for fans of The Paper Palace and Where the Crawdads Sing. “The farmer is dead. He is dead and all anyone wants to know is who killed him.” When her brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart all those years ago. Gabriel ...

Property Wrongs

Until 1969, the City of Winnipeg had undertaken only two public housing projects even though the failure of the market to provide adequate housing for low-income Winnipeggers had been apparent since the beginning of the century. By 1919, providing housing was a significant issue in municipal politics that was embraced by civic officials, professionals, reformers, labour leaders and social democratic politicians. It also became a proxy issue for refighting the 1919 General Strike at city hall. However, Winnipeg’s business community proved effective opponents of public housing. The struggle for public housing was also a struggle for democracy. Up until the 1960s, public housing required appr...

Leslie Hall Brown gained the opportunity to photograph in Belfast, Ireland at the original drawing offices where the Titanic was designed, which is by the shipyard where she was built. The once beautiful building had been neglected and fallen into a forlorn state of having been forgotten. From the moment Hall Brown stepped inside she felt something very profound. While she certainly thought of the human beings who suffered she suddenly realized there had to have been animals onboard as well and yet she could not recall having ever heard mention of this. She quickly learned that there was not any information readily available. The Titanic sank one hundred nine years ago and while there have many books and several movies about the great loss of human lives, there has not been any research or real documentation about the animals. What information that was available tended to be either inaccurate or even fabricated. This series began with many months of research in the hope of piecing together solid facts as to the animals. While each image is paired with a page of details Hall Brown's main focus is on the image itself and the specific animal that was its source of inspiration.
