"Build on the foundations of elementary mechanics of materials texts with this modern textbook on the analysis of stresses and strains in elastic bodies. Key features include: ] Presentation of advanced strength of materials through an integrated framework that focuses on four key components: computational tools, a step-by-step methodology for problem solving, treatment of the work energy concept and solving advanced strength of materials problems. ] A force-based finite element method alongside the conventional displacement-based (stiffness) finite element method. ] Detailed description of both uniform and non-uniform torsion problems, including the non-uniform torsion of members with general cross sections. ] Consideration of three-dimensional stress, strain and stress-strain relations in detail with matrix-vector relations. ] Extensive integration of MATLABa throughout. ] A complete online teaching package that includes slides, a solutions manual and MATLABa code. Based on classroom-proven material, this valuable resource provides a unified approach useful for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practicing engineers, and researchers"--
Build on elementary mechanics of materials texts with this treatment of the analysis of stresses and strains in elastic bodies.
This book describes in detail the physical and mathematical foundations of ultrasonic phased array measurements. The book uses linear systems theory to develop a comprehensive model of the signals and images that can be formed with phased arrays. Engineers working in the field of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) will find in this approach a wealth of information on how to design, optimize and interpret ultrasonic inspections with phased arrays. The fundamentals and models described in the book will also be of significant interest to other fields, including the medical ultrasound and seismology communities. A unique feature of this book is that it presents a unified theory of imagin...
Using a systems level approach, this book employs aspects of linear systems theory and wave propagation and scattering theory to develop a comprehensive model of an entire ultrasonic measurement system. This integrated approach leads to a new model-based engineering technology for designing, using and optimizing ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation inspections. In addition, the book incorporates MATLAB examples and exercises.
Ultrasound is currently used in a wide spectrum of applications ranging from medical imaging to metal cutting. This book is about using ultrasound in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspections. Ultrasonic NDE uses high-frequency acoustic/elastic waves to evaluate components without affecting their integrity or performance. This technique is commonly used in industry (particularly in aerospace and nuclear power) to inspect safety-critical parts for flaws during in-service use. Other important uses of ultrasonic NDE involve process control functions during manufacturing and fundamental materials characterization studies. It is not difficult to set up an ultrasonic NDE measurement system to la...
This text makes use of symbolic algebra and vector-matrix algebra to demonstrate a new approach to learning statics. Symbolic solutions are obtained, together with the types of solutions covered in other texts, so that students can see the advantages of this new approach. This innovative text is an extension of second-generation vector Statics courses to a new, third-generation matrix-vector Statics course, a course that addresses deformable as well as rigid bodies and employs MATLAB®. MATLAB® is used as a “calculator” whose built-in functions are used to solve statics problems. This text uses vectors and matrices to solve both statically determinate rigid body problems and statically indeterminate problems for deformable bodies. The inclusion of statically indeterminate problems is unique to this text. It is made possible by using symbolic algebra and a new, simplified vector-matrix formulation that combines the equations of equilibrium, the homogeneous solutions to those equations, and a description of the flexibilities found in the deformable elements of a structure to solve directly for the unknown forces/moments.
This authoritative and up-to-date series provides a comprehensive review of the latest research results in quantitative nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Leading investigators working in government agencies, major industries, and universities present a broad spectrum of work extending from basic research to early engineering applications.
This volume contains the proceedings of the 2000 International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The book captures a snapshot view of the state of the art in the field of mechanics and will be invaluable to engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines.
Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed...
This unique book presents decision analysis in the context of mathematical modeling and game theory. The author emphasizes and focuses on the model formulation and modeling-building skills required for decision analysis, as well as the technology to support the analysis. The primary objective of Decision Analysis through Modeling and Game Theory is illustrative in nature. It sets the tone through the introduction to mathematical modeling. The text provides a process for formally thinking about the problem and illustrates many scenarios and illustrative examples. These techniques and this approach center on the fact (a) decision makers at all levels must be exposed to the tools and techniques...
