Fighting the Antichrist
Fighting the Antichrist analyzes the discourse against Catholicism within England, from the breach from Rome in 1534 until the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Cultural representations of Catholicism were decisive in creating and molding the perceptions that many Englishmen had of the new Anglican Church. Anti-Catholic propaganda elaborated a stereotype of the Catholic that converged with other negative cultural types common in the period. These stereotypes allowed anti-Catholics to send a clear message to their Protestant countrymen: that Catholicism was a devilish, corrupt power that could undermine their Church and State. Special attention is paid to political and doctrinal plays and pamphlets, given their appeal to different social groups and their role in creating a new public opinion.
The Honourable, Pleasant, and Rare Conceited Historie of Palmendos : a Critical Edition
"This volume contains the first critical edition of The Honourable, Pleasant and Rare Conceited Historie of Palmendos (London, 1589), a chivalric romance translated into English by Anthony Munday. Munday's translation is based on a Spanish original entitled Primaleâon de Grecia I (Salamanca, 1512). This Spanish romance, the second book in the Palmerin cycle, soon became a best-seller in the Spanish market, with several editions published between 1512 and 1588. The work was also translated into many continental languages. Anthony Munday translated his Palmendos from the French version by Franðcois de Vernassal late in 1588. The Historie of Palmendos comprised the first thirty-two chapters of the French text and focused on the adventures of Palmendos on his journey to Constantinople. It was reprinted in 1653 and 1663 with slight alterations from the 1589 version. This is an original-spelling edition that produces a most reliable text, as close as possible to the author's original manuscript"--
