The wall as living place

There is ample evidence as to how the modern masters, in their shared pursuit of formal inventions and constructional inventions, variously referred to past examples they had freely chosen as guides that could inspire and support them in their strenuous pursuit of new things. The buildings shaped like soft clouds and gelatinous bowels, or the spiked bravura pieces designed by today's fashionable architects have no relation with either construction or history. Louis Kahn, instead, kept form, structure and history paradigmatically together. The book systematically reviews the intense structural experimentation that, in terms not just of building engineering but of spatial and representational ...

Comparison

Design-Driven Research encompasses many different forms of research in which architectural, design, and artistic practices and the results thereof, are implemented as a means to generate and disseminate new knowledge. This includes contemporary alternative formulations of the field, like Artistic Research, Research by Design, Practice-Based/Led Research, Creative Practice Research. CA2RE+ is a joint Erasmus+ strategic partnership of nine European universities in association with EAAE, ELIA and ARENA, and it supports early-career researchers and Ph.D. students to improve the quality of their research. CA²RE+ explicates the transformative and innovative power of highly individual strategies in artistic research, the diversity of research traditions, and the integrative nature of architectural design research, able to face the contemporary knowledge fragmentation from humanities, social sciences, and technology. Along with the CA2RE+ timeline project, the focus of Milano conference narrows by comparing design strategies and tactics applied to highlight common approaches and methodological specificities within the consortium and the broader community involved.

The Joyful House Investigation on Marcio Kogan

There is no violence in the architecture of Studio mk27. There is no gravity in their domestic spaces. The projects are a concentration of boundless optimism, compositional serenity and achieved balance. Any type of brandished intellectualism has been banned from their happy houses. The architecture opens to the inhabitant by means of empathy, proposing order and harmony as the main design principles. 75 colour images

Suspended Living in Temporary Space

On 9th October 2017, the international conference Suspended Living in Temporary Space was held at the headquarters of the Architecture School of the Polytechnic of Turin. Some scholars, architects but not only, have found themselves reflecting on the role of the architect and architecture within the almost apocalyptic scenario of the great migratory waves following disasters and emergencies, with specific attention to the context of the Mediterranean area. In this scenario, there are those who flee alone and with the whole family, people who leave a promising profession and others who leave almost nothing; unaccompanied minors and adults. For everyone, we must, first and foremost, guarantee ...

The affective city

Cities are not made only of stone: they harbor ways of life, practices, movements, moods, atmospheres, feelings. Yet the ineffable nature of affects has long deprived human passions of a meaningful role when it comes to observing urban space and envisioning its future transformation. With this book, we explore the contemporary city and its transitional conditions from a different perspective: a quest to understand how the space of collective life and the feelings this engenders are connected, how they mutually give form to each other. In an interdisciplinary collection of essays, The Affective City means to open a discussion on the “soft” presences animating the world of urban objects: beyond the city built out of mere things, this book’s focus is on the forces that make urban life emerge, thrive, flourish, but also wither, and sometimes die. A task crucial for the survival of cities as human habitats, in an urban world that – with every passing day – seems to draw closer a crisis.

Architecture and Light

Architecture and Light

Light is the soul of space, a breath that passes through it, giving it life. Chasing the shadow unabated, in a ritual that makes visible the passage of time. The architecture is, first of all, the implementation of this ritual that ignites the dialectic between fixity of space and dynamic action of light, between the finiteness of the measures and incommensurability natural element, between concreteness of matter and abstraction of the vacuum. This book provides system certain basic principles that govern the relationship between architectural space and natural light to put them at the center of the architect's work. 33 bicoloured illustrations

First comprehensive architectural monograph by DEMOGO with images by Iwan Baan In their first comprehensive architectural monograph, the architects of DEMOGO explore the driving question of the importance of context for their architecture and invite designers and theorists to reflect with them on the relationship between contemporary spaces and complex contexts. Built and planned projects are presented in chronological order with specially produced drawings and models. The most remarkable buildings and contexts are captured through the eyes of renowned photographer Iwan Baan. The guest authors Petra Blaisse, Pippo Ciorra, Giovanni Corbellini, Sara Marini and Alberto Bertagna also shed light on central questions of DEMOGO's work and supplement the monograph with a variety of perspectives and personal reflections.
