The Alkaloids: Chemistry and Pharmacology

Biotechnology is the application of biological agents in either manufacturing industry or service operation. The essence of biotechnology is its multi-disciplinary nature requiring wide range of science and engineering inputs. The ultimate success of biotechnology is dependent upon advances in and support for the fundamental sciences which form its substratum. In this book, some important features of microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, and engineering which have a significant bearing on the education and development of biotechnology are highlighted. This book may stimulate the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents in the service of the most urgent human needs.
The current growing interest of molecular biologists in plant hormone research is undoubtedly the most promising development of recent times. Many papers were presented during the 14th International Conference on Plant Growth Substances illustrating the impact of this new approach on our understanding of hormone-controlled processes. The specific character is the integrated study of plant growth regulation at all levels ranging from single molecules to the entire plant and its functioning in the environment. Hormones play an essential role in the regulation, but not an exclusive one. Other compounds and factors, such as Ca2+, for instance are often of equal relevance, because they may take part in the signal transduction pathway. Moreover, regulation of the regulator by non-hormonal factors is an essential part of any control mechanism. The present volume reflects the change in interest from plant growth substances to plant growth regulation.
Doubled haploid technology is an important tool for plant breeding. It allows for significant time reduction in the achievement of homozygous breeding lines of value in crop improvement. This volume is a compilation of plenary lectures presented at the IOCD/CYTED Symposium held in Panama City, Panama in 1997, and covers different aspects of research into plants from North, South and Central America. The topics treated all revolve around the chemistry, pharmacology, and biology of these plants. The importance of pharmaceuticals derived from plant sources is described, together with the potential of ethnomedicine for providing new leads in the search for bioactive constituents. Since 1984 and 1988, when meetings were held on the topic of primary and secondary metabolism of plant cell cultures, there has been a clear shift of the focus of ongoing research. While the cell culture itself and the production of secondary metabolites and the biosynthetic pathways and the activity of enzymes were major topics, now these aspects are linked with genes, i.e. molecular biology becomes more prominent. This state-of-the-art book has contributions on such subjects as fermentation, enzymology of secondary metabolism, catabolism of secondary metabolites, elicitation of pathways and genetic modification of metabolic pathways.
