Li Feng grew up in Mao's communist China with her mother's motto burning in her ears - success demands two things: unconditional sacrifice and absolute mental focus. Finally breaking free of her mother's overbearing clutches and fleeing to Sydney as an adult, Li struggled to make sense of her own lost childhood by piecing together her family's history. What she found was a heartbreaking tale of love and loss that echoed across four generations of women - from Silver Dollar, who fought to regain her destiny after being sold into a loveless marriage at the age of 13; to Ming Xiu, who was forced to make a choice no mother should have to make following the execution of her husband; to Li's mother Rong, who grew up as an outcast on the periphery of society but never gave up hope of a better life for herself and for her daughters.

Despite economic and political upheaval, these women battled to offer their children a better future through sheer determination in the face of unimaginable adversity. FORGED FROM SILVER DOLLAR is an inspiring true story about modern China, iron will and the strength of a mother's love.

The year after its founding in 1949, the People¿s Republic of China began its campaign to overturn the traditional marriage system. In order to reach audiences of limited literacy, the Chinese government produced and distributed inexpensive "comic books" to farmers and workers. Li Fengjin: How the New Marriage Law Helped Chinese Women Stand Up is a lively example of this early PRC propaganda. Written in graphic novel format, the pamphlet tells the story of the injustices the young woman Li Fengjin faced under the the old marriage system, and the freedom she finally achieved with the help of the Chinese Communist Party and its marriage law. The pamphlet is essentially a facsimile of the original, but also includes an insightful introduction, useful explanatory notes, a select bibliography, and the text of the 1950 marriage law. The translation is true to the tone of CCP propaganda. Li Fengjin provides an interesting and informative overview of an important moment in modern Chinese history, with graphics that grab student interest.

Landscape and Power in Early China

The ascendancy of the Western Zhou in Bronze Age China, 1045–771 BC, was a critical period in the development of Chinese civilisation and culture. This book addresses the complex relationship between geography and political power in the context of the crisis and fall of the Western Zhou state. Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, the book shows how inscribed bronze vessels can be used to reveal changes in the political space of the period and explores literary and geographical evidence to produce a coherent understanding of the Bronze Age past. By taking an interdisciplinary approach which embraces archaeology, history and geography, the book thoroughly reinterprets late Western Zhou history and probes the causes of its gradual decline and eventual fall. Supported throughout by maps created from the GIS datasets and by numerous on-site photographs, Landscape and Power in Early China gives significant insights into this important Bronze Age society.

He has short hair, healthy wheat skin, a knife-like face full of youthful and lively breath, and a pair of dark eyes with cheerful and lively light.
