Integrated Architecture

Integrated Architecture is both a historical and contemporary work. The book was fi rst published in 1989 by Wu Liangyong, one of contemporary China’s most infl uential architects and theoreticians with the title A General Theory on Architecture. His eminence is also recognised by the international architectural community, above all, the group of architectural and urban planning theoreticians battling for a more decisive reform to the concepts, methodologies and practices presiding over the construction and requalifi cation of the contemporary metropolis. I fi rst met professor Wu Liangyong in 2005 at the Faculty of Architecture at the Tsinghua University of Beijing; his Faculty. Wu Li...

Seventy years of revolution and turmoil have had a severe impact on the miraculous ancient urban form of Beijing, but economic growth since the early 1990s has threatened to deal the coup de grace. In Rehabilitating the Old City of Beijing, Wu Liangyong presents an impassioned plea to turn the tide of demolition and offers a new direction for the planning and development of China's capital. His project for the renewal of the Ju'er Hutong (Chrysanthemum Lane) neighbourhood in the heart of Beijing's Old City takes pride of place in this book. A thoughtful analysis of those aspects of the ancient capital's features, which the project aims to respect and conserve, is followed by a detailed account of the design and development process of the project itself.

In his professional career of more than 60 years, Wu Liangyong has made significant contributions to the development of architecture and urban planning in China. This book explores the relationship between humans and environments, also with a view of the way out for human settlements in China after great changes have taken place in the past two decades. In fact, the construction of livable environment is a collective creation of all the citizens. We should trust the public and believe in their creativity. Even though cities and towns are a complicated system and the growing whole of self-organization and new matters keep emerging with time, we should believe that the public contains the grea...

The Horizontal Skyscraper

Chinese cities are undergoing profound changes. Urban development has transformed the townscape; low-rise structures based on courtyard type housing, horizontal in character, have been replaced by vertical constructions. In the 1980s and 1990s Chinese cities were featured by the conflicting wishes for rapid modernization and cultural continuity. The articles of this book refer to experiences drawn from this particular period of time, and are selected among case studies and related theoretical considerations. The case studies are concentrated on four cities: Beijing, Xi'an, Quanzhou and Shanghai. The authors have all been active in different fields of urban transformation in historic Chinese cities. They are politicians, historians, planners, anthropologists, architects and scholars. The articles describe the substantial transformation of the cities and the implications of this change. The contributing authors represent three countries; China, France and Norway. They all participated in two conferences in 1995 and 1996, dealing with urban renewal in housing areas of traditional Chinese cities. The outcome of these conferences constitute the raw material for this book.

Contemporary Urban Design Thoughts in China

This book proposes and systematically discusses four trends of thoughts in contemporary Chinese urban design. As the first book to systematically introduce contemporary Chinese urban design thoughts, this book objectively displays the macroscopic picture of contemporary urban design development of China from the time dimension, sorting out seven historical stages and three disputes. This book is mainly divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the vertical description, taking the major events in the seven historical stages as the context, combing the macro picture of the development of contemporary urban design in China in the last 100 years, and describing the three controversies in...

The Concrete Dragon

China is the most rapidly urbanizing nation in the world, with an urban population that may well reach one billion within a generation. Over the past 25 years, surging economic growth has propelled a construction boom unlike anything the world has ever seen, radically transforming both city and countryside in its wake. The speed and scale of China's urban revolution challenges nearly all our expectations about architecture, urbanism and city planning. China's ambition to be a major player on the global stage is written on the skylines of every major city. This is a nation on the rise, and it is building for the record books. China is now home to some of the world's tallest skyscrapers and bi...

A study of traditional and modernist attitudes toward architecture in China from the 1840s to the present. Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the 1840s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. Ti and yong have gone through various transformations--for example, from "Chinese learning for essential principles and Western learning for practical application" to "socialist essence and cultural...
