This volume focuses on Chinese society in the environment created by new media. It offers insights into Chinese public opinion for an international readership, and to promote the media literacy and crisis coping capacity of all social sectors by integrating multiple research perspectives, including journalism and communication, management, sociology, psychology, information security, etc. The volume is guided by an innovative “overarching public opinion research framework” as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods, and includes in-depth studies on: the status quo of Chinese social opinion and Internet public opinion, the developmental history of Chinese Internet public opinion over the past ten years (2003-2012), the online communication of public events, and public satisfaction with the government.
This volume explores how and by whom early modern Dutch Bibles were used. Through a detailed analysis of paratextual features and readers’ traces in over 180 surviving Bible copies, Renske Hoff displays how individuals manifested their faith in owning, reading, and personalising the Bible, in a period characterised by religious turmoil. From nuns and countesses to tailors and merchants: Bibles were read by a diverse public. Printer-publishers shaped the contents and paratextual features of their Bible editions to suit the varied wishes of the reading public. Readers themselves added marginalia, corrected the text, or pasted texts and images in their books, displaying their creativity as users as well as stressing the malleability of the material Bible.
Cyberactivism already has a rich history, but over the past decade the participatory web—with its de-centralized information/media sharing, portability, storage capacity, and user-generated content—has reshaped political and social change. Cyberactivism on the Participatory Web examines the impact of these new technologies on political organizing and protest across the political spectrum, from the Arab Spring to artists to far-right groups. Information society projects promise wealth and better services to those countries which digitise and encourage the consumer and citizen to participate. As paper recedes into the background and digital data becomes the primary resource in the information society, what does this mean for privacy? Can there be privacy when every communication made through ever-developing ubiquitous devices is recorded? Data protection legislation developed as a reply to large scale centralised databases which contained incorrect data and where data controllers denied access and refused to remedy information flaws. The underlying mathematical definition of such a model is a set of scalar fields, which define the geometrical and physical properties of every point in three dimensional space. The rise of the internet and mobile telecommunications has created the possibility of using large datasets to understand behavior at unprecedented levels of temporal and geographic resolution. Online social networks attract the most users, though users of these new technologies provide their data through multiple sources, e.g. call detail records, blog posts, web forums, and content aggregation sites. These data allow scholars to adjudicate between competing theories as well as develop new ones, much as the microscope facilitated the development of the germ theory of disease. Of those networks, Twitter presents an ideal combination of size, international reach, and data accessibility that make it the preferred platform in academic studies. Acquiring, cleaning, and analyzing these data, however, require new tools and processes.
