Freestanding Houses
To continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. For the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied, a deeper grasp of the underlying types is indispensable. For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure. The fourth volume deals with the types of freestanding houses, whose all-around orientation allows for the optimal arrangement of all dwellings. A presentation of the freestanding house as an isolated element and as a building block for larger structures is followed by discussions of topics such as self-sufficiency versus neighborhoods, "Raumplan" versus "plan libre," and individuality versus density. Within each type, variants are distinguished according to type of access, number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans and sections newly drawn to scale.

Helmut Richter's architecture is determined by the concept of progress: his buildings are hallmarks of the development of constructional engineering; his spatial concepts, especially in numerous housing projects, presume new social behaviors. Richter's oeuvre, which is comprehensively presented in this book for the first time, is characterized by an attitude directed towards an ultimate clarity and efficiency, understanding architecture as a risky yet vital process of insight, always experimenting with functional patterns and with building design, a continuous experiment with the limits of technology. Richter's most recent buildings are not only milestones of contemporary Austrian architecture but also set a standard for international development. Since 1977 Helmut Richter has lived in Vienna as a freelance architect and since 1991 he has been teaching as a professor for building design and construction at Vienna Technical University.

Otto Häuselmayer Städtebauliche Architektur

Hinzu kommen eine Brücke, Nutzbauten, Platzgestaltungen und die international viel beachtete Überdachung der archäologischen Ausgrabungen in Ephesos. Sie wirkt im Kontext seines Werkes wie eine retrospektive Stadtintervention. Auch der Entwurf für das Linzer Musiktheater fehlt nicht, welches bereits juriert und beauftragt war, für das jedoch in letzter Sekunde der Auftrag zurückgezogen wurde: als Bauernopfer eines politischen Ränkespiels. Das Buch dokumentiert erstmals Häuselmayers Bauten, die sich bei den Nutzern größter Beliebtheit erfreuen, da er mit Liebe zum Detail plant und zugleich den urbanen Kontext berücksichtigt.
T-Center St. Marx, Wien / Vienna

Composers of the Nazi Era
How does creativity thrive in the face of fascism? How can a highly artistic individual function professionally in so threatening a climate? The final book in a critically acclaimed trilogy that includes Different Drummers (OUP 1992) and The Twisted Muse (OUP 1997), this is a detailed study of the often interrelated careers of eight outstanding German composers who lived and worked amid the dictatorship of the Third Reich: Werner Egk, Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Carl Orff, Hans Pfitzner, Arnold Schoenberg, and Richard Strauss. Noted historian Michael H. Kater weighs issues of accommodation and resistance to ask whether these artists corrupted themselves in the service of a criminal regime -- and if so, whether this is evident in their music. He also considers the degrees to which the Nazis poetically, socially, economically, and aesthetically succeeded in their treatment of these individuals, whose lives and compositions represent diverse responses to totalitarianism.
