Military Deployment and its Consequences for Families

War-related separations challenge families in many ways. The worry and uncertainty associated with combat deployments provokes anxiety in family members left at home. Lengthy separations may challenge the personal, social, and economic coping resources of families at home. In this war, thanks to medical advances, many service members who previously would have died of their injuries are returning home to live long, although altered lives. As a result, families are facing the additional challenge of assisting service members who have experienced amputation, traumatic brain injury, and psychological wounds. These challenges are faced not only by service members in the active component of the ar...

Exemplars of Assessment in Higher Education

Co-published with “While assessment may feel to constituents like an activity of accountability simply for accreditors, it is most appropriate to approach assessment as an activity of accountability for students. Filipinos in Stockton

The first Filipino settlers arrived in Stockton, California, around 1898, and through most of the 20th century, this city was home to the largest community of Filipinos outside the Philippines. Because countless Filipinos worked in, passed through, and settled here, it became the crossroads of Filipino America. Yet immigrants were greeted with signs that read "Positively No Filipinos Allowed" and were segregated to a four-block area centered on Lafayette and El Dorado Streets, which they called "Little Manila." In the 1970s, redevelopment and the Crosstown Freeway decimated the Little Manila neighborhood. Despite these barriers, Filipino Americans have created a vibrant ethnic community and a rich cultural legacy. Filipino immigrants and their descendants have shaped the history, culture, and economy of the San Joaquin Delta area.

Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures

In From Theory to Practice: Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures, contributors to the collection focus on several interrelated issues. They examine the ways in which the members of the millennial generation influence how we work and communicate with our millennial students, colleagues and employees. They also elaborate on how to create work-life balance for the members of the millennial generation and explore ways in which millennials can be open and responsive to others in a society who don’t necessarily share the values, political views or desires of the millennial generation, nor the ways in which they prefer to communicate. This collection engages in a scholarly dial...
