Ecology of the Marine Fishes of Cuba

Situated at the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba's coastal waters are home to one of the most diverse fish faunas in the Western Hemisphere. However, until now, information in English about Cuban marine fishes and their habitats has been limited. This comprehensive guide to the region's fishes fills that void. Originally published in Spanish in 1994, Ecology of the Marine Fishes of Cuba has been completely updated and revised for this English edition. The book collects and expands on the findings of more than 20 years of work by and international team of ichthyologists and marine biologists studying the coastal fishes and habitats of Cuba. In...

Islands in the Sand

Nearshore hardbottom reefs of Florida’s east coast are used by over 1100 species of fishes, invertebrates, algae, and sea turtles. These rocky reefs support reproduction, settlement, and habitat use, and are energy sources and sinks. They are also buried by beach renourishment projects in which artificial reefs are used for mitigation. This comprehensive book is for research scientists and agency personnel, yet accessible to interested laypersons including beachfront residents and water-users. An unprecedented collection of research information and often stunning color photographs are assembled including over 1250 technical citations and 127 figures. These shallow reefs are part of a mosaic of coastal shelf habitats including estuarine seagrasses and mangroves, and offshore coral reefs. These hardbottom habitats are federally designated as Essential Fish Habitats - Habitats of Particular Concern and are important feeding areas for federally-protected sea turtles. Organismal and assemblage responses to natural and man-made disturbances, including climate change, are examined in the context of new research and management opportunities for east Florida’s islands in the sand.

Sustainable Development - the Cultural Perspective

"This current volume is a result of the Seventh and Eighth International Forum on Sustainable Technological Development in a Globalizing World. The Seventh Forum was held June 9-12, 2010 in Berlin. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology hosted the event, which was organized around culture and sustainability. What we each value as a society, as a country, in our culture, is what we want to protect. What is sustainable is only what we value. This applies all the more to sustainable development which is planned for long time scales and therefore to go beyond individual sustainable technology solutions as well as economic and political cycles. What we hold in high regard is the result of cultural...

Cuba in a Global Context

Cuba in a Global Context examines the unlikely prominence of the island nation's geopolitical role. The contributors to this volume explore the myriad ways in which Cuba has not only maintained but often increased its reach and influence in Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. From the beginning, the Castro regime established a foreign policy that would legitimize the revolutionary government, if not in the eyes of the United States at least in the eyes of other global actors. The essays in this volume shed new light on Cuban diplomacy with communist China as well as with Western governments such as Great Britain and Canada. In recent years, Cubans have improved their lives in the face o...

"This guide is intended for the identification of early life history (ELH) specimens of snappers (Lutjanidae) collected principally by plankton nets from marine waters of the western central Atlantic. This area is bounded by 35° north latitude on the north, 50° west longitude on the east, the Equator on the south, and the continental margins on the west. It is basically the area defined by FAO as the Western central Atlantic Fishing Area 31 which includes the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The region is tropical and subtropical with important fishing areas and a high diversity of species. The area is also characterized by a large number of coral reefs"--Introduction, paragraph 1
