Number Theory and Combinatorics

Over a career that spanned 60 years, Ronald L. Graham (known to all as Ron) made significant contributions to the fields of discrete mathematics, number theory, Ramsey theory, computational geometry, juggling and magical mathematics, and many more. Ron also was a mentor to generations of mathematicians, he gave countless talks and helped bring mathematics to a wider audience, and he held signifi cant leadership roles in the mathematical community. This volume is dedicated to the life and memory of Ron Graham, and includes 20-articles by leading scientists across a broad range of subjects that refl ect some of the many areas in which Ron worked.

1966. Recently married, Nick and Rosemary Storey overhear two foreign exchange traders boasting that they can get secret information from Civil Servants about a possible devaluation of the Pound. A squash club/wine bar in the City is supposedly where this information is passed on. But when the two men are found dead in the squash club, leaving a suicide note, Nick and Rosemary smell a rat, especially when it becomes clear that they entered the locked club and killed themselves without leaving any keys. Assuming that the deaths were linked to the men's boasting, they pursue various leads without getting very far until a chance conversation allows them to arrange for several suspects to be kept under surveillance. But unmasking them still involves Nick in skating on some very thin ice. "A Well-Respected Man" is the latest in a series of books set mostly in Customs & Excise by Richard Hernaman Allen, a former Commissioner.

Sequences and their Applications

This book contains survey papers and research papers by leading experts on sequences and their applications. It discusses both the theory of sequences and their applications in cryptography, coding theory, communications systems, numerical computation and computer simulation. Sequences have important applications in ranging systems, spread spectrum communication systems, multi-terminal system identification, code division multiply access communications systems, global positioning systems, software testing, circuit testing, computer simulation, and stream ciphers. The papers contained in this volume bring together experts from discrete mathematics, computer science and communications engineering, and help to bridge advances in these different areas.

Advances in Analysis

Princeton University's Elias Stein was the first mathematician to see the profound interconnections that tie classical Fourier analysis to several complex variables and representation theory. His fundamental contributions include the Kunze-Stein phenomenon, the construction of new representations, the Stein interpolation theorem, the idea of a restriction theorem for the Fourier transform, and the theory of Hp Spaces in several variables. Through his great discoveries, through books that have set the highest standard for mathematical exposition, and through his influence on his many collaborators and students, Stein has changed mathematics. Drawing inspiration from Stein’s contributions to...

Algorithmic Probability and Combinatorics

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Sessions on Algorithmic Probability and Combinatories held at DePaul University on October 5-6, 2007 and at the University of British Columbia on October 4-5, 2008. This volume collects cutting-edge research and expository on algorithmic probability and combinatories. It includes contributions by well-established experts and younger researchers who use generating functions, algebraic and probabilistic methods as well as asymptotic analysis on a daily basis. Walks in the quarter-plane and random walks (quantum, rotor and self-avoiding), permutation tableaux, and random permutations are considered. In addition, articles in the volume pres...

Fueling Innovation and Discovery

The mathematical sciences are part of everyday life. Modern communication, transportation, science, engineering, technology, medicine, manufacturing, security, and finance all depend on the mathematical sciences. Fueling Innovation and Discovery describes recent advances in the mathematical sciences and advances enabled by mathematical sciences research. It is geared toward general readers who would like to know more about ongoing advances in the mathematical sciences and how these advances are changing our understanding of the world, creating new technologies, and transforming industries. Although the mathematical sciences are pervasive, they are often invoked without an explicit awareness ...

Combinatorial games are games of pure strategy involving two players, with perfect information and no element of chance. Starting from the very basics of gameplay and strategy, the authors cover a wide range of topics, from game algebra to special classes of games. Classic techniques are introduced and applied in novel ways to analyze both old and

The Singularity

This volume represents the combination of two special issues of the Journal of Consciousness Studies on the topic of the technological singularity. Could artificial intelligence really out-think us, and what would be the likely repercussions if it could? Leading authors contribute to the debate, which takes the form of a target chapter by philosopher David Chalmers, plus commentaries from the likes of Daniel Dennett, Nick Bostrom, Ray Kurzweil, Ben Goertzel, Frank Tipler, among many others. Chalmers then responds to the commentators to round off the discussion.
