The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is intended to provide health insurance to all US citizens, but many people will likely continue to have gaps in their insurance coverage after reform. For this study, we used longitudinal survey data from Panel 11 (2006–2007) of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to examine the effect of gaps in insurance coverage on adults’ receipt of preventive screening. Artificially Intelligent Social Risk Adjustment
Prominent voices have called for a better way to measure, predict, and adjust for social factors in healthcare and population health. Local area characteristics are sometimes framed as a proxy for patient characteristics, but they are often independently associated with health outcomes. We have developed an “artificially intelligent” approach to risk adjustment for local social determinants of health (SDoH) using random forest models to understand life expectancy at the Census tract level. The Palgrave Handbook of Affect Studies and Textual Criticism
This volume provides a comprehensive account of how scholarship on affect and scholarship on texts have come to inform one another over the past few decades. The result has been that explorations of how texts address, elicit, shape, and dramatize affect have become central to contemporary work in literary, film, and art criticism, as well as in critical theory, rhetoric, performance studies, and aesthetics. Guiding readers to the variety of topics, themes, interdisciplinary dialogues, and sub-disciplinary specialties that the study of interplay between affect and texts has either inaugurated or revitalized, the handbook showcases and engages the diversity of scholarly topics, approaches, and projects that thinking of affect in relation to texts and related media open up or enable. These include (but are not limited to) investigations of what attention to affect brings to established methods of studying texts—in terms of period, genre, cultural contexts, rhetoric, and individual authorship.
Challenges facing CAHPS surveys and opportunities for modernization
Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) surveys are a standard survey tool for obtaining patient assessments of health plans, hospitals, and health care providers. These surveys measure patient experiences of care, which is considered a component of health care quality. Providers use their survey results to improve patient experience, which is associated with better health care outcomes and reduced costs. CAHPS data also empower consumers and payers to make more informed choices about providers or facilities. Some people argue that CAHPS surveys are outdated and distract providers from clinical health care quality. In this paper, we review the benefits of CAHPS, the current challenges of these surveys, and ideas for modernization and innovation to ensure these surveys remain relevant. We encourage the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and its contractors to review and implement these innovations to the CAHPS surveys and the dissemination of their results.
