Milicianas

"Women played an integral role in the Spanish Civil War. In fact, women's participation in the anti-fascist resistance constituted one of the greatest mass political mobilizations of women in Spain's history. Milicianas provides a comprehensive picture of what life was like for the women who fought alongside their male comrades during the first year of the Spanish Civil War, focusing on how the women themselves viewed this experience. It examines the political and social forces that led to the acceptance of women into the ranks of armed combatants, and those that led to their eventual removal from the front"--Page 4 of cover.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is intended to provide health insurance to all US citizens, but many people will likely continue to have gaps in their insurance coverage after reform. For this study, we used longitudinal survey data from Panel 11 (2006–2007) of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to examine the effect of gaps in insurance coverage on adults’ receipt of preventive screening. We categorized individuals (n = 8,985) between the ages of 18 and 64 at baseline as continuously insured (private only or any public), intermittently insured, or continuously uninsured. Outcome measures were routine checkup, blood pressure check, cholesterol check, flu shot, sigmoidoscopy or colonoscop...

Limited information exists about enrollment in Part D prescription coverage by Medicare beneficiaries with cancer. Part D coverage may increase access to medicines. This study evaluated patterns of Part D uptake and costs and assessed the effects of coverage on hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) use among people with colorectal cancer (CRC). We analyzed Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)–Medicare linked data on fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare beneficiaries with at least 36 months of follow-up who were diagnosed with CRC at any point from January 2007 through December 2010, and a matched cohort of beneficiaries without cancer. Dual (Medicare/Medicaid) enrollees we...

Prominent voices have called for a better way to measure, predict, and adjust for social factors in healthcare and population health. Local area characteristics are sometimes framed as a proxy for patient characteristics, but they are often independently associated with health outcomes. We have developed an “artificially intelligent” approach to risk adjustment for local social determinants of health (SDoH) using random forest models to understand life expectancy at the Census tract level. Our Local Social Inequity score draws on more than 150 neighborhood-level variables across 10 SDoH domains. As piloted in Ohio, the score explains 73 percent of the variation in life expectancy by Cens...

This volume provides a comprehensive account of how scholarship on affect and scholarship on texts have come to inform one another over the past few decades. The result has been that explorations of how texts address, elicit, shape, and dramatize affect have become central to contemporary work in literary, film, and art criticism, as well as in critical theory, rhetoric, performance studies, and aesthetics. Guiding readers to the variety of topics, themes, interdisciplinary dialogues, and sub-disciplinary specialties that the study of interplay between affect and texts has either inaugurated or revitalized, the handbook showcases and engages the diversity of scholarly topics, approaches, and projects that thinking of affect in relation to texts and related media open up or enable. These include (but are not limited to) investigations of what attention to affect brings to established methods of studying texts—in terms of period, genre, cultural contexts, rhetoric, and individual authorship.

Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) surveys are a standard survey tool for obtaining patient assessments of health plans, hospitals, and health care providers. These surveys measure patient experiences of care, which is considered a component of health care quality. Providers use their survey results to improve patient experience, which is associated with better health care outcomes and reduced costs. CAHPS data also empower consumers and payers to make more informed choices about providers or facilities. Some people argue that CAHPS surveys are outdated and distract providers from clinical health care quality. In this paper, we review the benefits of CAHPS, the current challenges of these surveys, and ideas for modernization and innovation to ensure these surveys remain relevant. We encourage the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and its contractors to review and implement these innovations to the CAHPS surveys and the dissemination of their results.
