Key strategies for reducing transportation emissions--increasing the use of transit, changing land-use patterns, and adopting energy-efficient technologies and fuels in transit fleets--are discussed.
Aesthetics and Ethics in Twenty-First Century British Novels
A fresh set of concerns face the twenty-first century British novelist. In this study of the four key novelists Zadie Smith, Nadeem Aslam, Hari Kunzru and David Mitchell, the the changes in narrative approaches and critical directions of a new post-1989 fiction are explored. Close readings of the writers are informed by a range of contemporary theorists, critics and commentators to reveal the emphases of twenty-first century fiction. Terror, fear, consumerism, multinationalism, and corporatism: the terms circulating in culture and social networks are evident in Smith's faith in ethical living, Aslam's consideration of multiculturalism, the novels Kunzru builds around the politics of identity and in the importance Mitchell places on the interconnectedness of human life. By putting the emergence of a new British literary dynamic in the context of ethical as well as global contexts, this study analyzes the transformed fictional perceptions of a world no longer defined by the stand off of super powers.

Alienation and Resistance
This collection draws together recent work by new and emerging scholars which examines the representation of alienation and resistance in texts and images, both modern and traditional. The essays collected here incorporate both “high” and “low” culture, covering a wide range of disciplines from traditional literary sources to the more modern mediums of film and comic. Informing each of the contributions is one overriding question: what are the roles, forms, and conditions of alienation and resistance in our culture and its diverse media? The contributors to this collection find examples of both alienation and resistance everywhere, from sixteenth century drama to contemporary fiction, from American comics to Eastern European cinema, from representations of the body to the site of the body itself. In seeking out these representations of alienation and resistance, the essays begin also to probe the limits and limitations of such terms. As such, the collection as a whole offers both a broad overview of the field of play as it stands today and makes tentative suggestions as to potential paths of future inquiry.

Postcolonialism as a theoretical cogitation is bracketed under cultural studies. Postcolonial studies in literature refers to the narratives from or on the nations that were colonised previously. The history is such that even countries like America and Great Britain were colonised before the transformation in the position and outlook from colonised to coloniser. Yet, the narratives of Great Britain or even America do not fall under the categorisation of postcolonial studies. This is because of their elevation to the status of super power and big brother. Given this context what remains the logic behind this nomenclature. For the sake of simpler understanding, any country colonised by European countries, particularly Great Britain is referred to as a colonised country. This will constitute India, Middle East, Africa, Carribean Islands, Latin America, Australia and Sri Lanka among others. It can be easily said that Europe as a continent, invaded then subdued rest of the continents in the world.
