Buku ini bermula dari sebuah keprihatinan. Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI) DennyJA melakukan survei analisis pro-Pancasila. Ternyata persentase publik pro-Pancasila terus menurun. Pada 2005, publik yang pro-Pancasila mencapai 85,2%. Tetapi tahun 2018 menjadi 75,3%. Jadi dalam waktu 13 tahun, jumlah publik yang pro-Pancasila menurun 10% Berangkat dari situasi semacam itu, sebagai intelektu-al Denny JA menulis esai yang beredar luas di media sosial. Esainya yang berjudul "NKRI Bersyariah atau Ruang Publik yang Manusiawi?" terasa sangat menggugah. Buku ini merupakan kumpulan tulisan dari 21 pakar, yang mewakili berbagai bidang keilmuan dan minat.
