In The Golden Mean of Languages, Alisa van de Haar sheds new light on the debates regarding the form and status of the vernacular in the early modern Low Countries, where both Dutch and French were local tongues. The fascination with the history, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary of Dutch and French has been studied mainly from monolingual perspectives tracing the development towards modern Dutch or French. Van de Haar shows that the discussions on these languages were rooted in multilingual environments, in particular in French schools, Calvinist churches, printing houses, and chambers of rhetoric. The proposals that were formulated there to forge Dutch and French into useful forms were not directed solely at uniformization but were much more diverse.

This PhD study researches the editorial strategies of an Antwerp based family of printers, the Verdussens. Based on unique sources and on research done in Belgium, Spain and Mexico, this study wants to emphasize the role of the printer-bookseller in early-modern Europe as the main financier, creator and distributor of the only mass medium of its time. The strategical decisions of the Verdussen company allowed them to stay in business for more than two centuries in a politically and economically difficult times.
When compiling the short-title catalogue of books printed in the sixteenth-century northern Netherlands from 1541 to 1600, Paul Valkema Blouw was confronted with a large number of ‘problem cases’, such as anonymously and/or surreptitiously printed editions, fictitious printers and undated or falsely dated printed works. By minutely analysing the typefaces, initials, vignettes and other ornaments used, drawing from his extensive knowledge of secondary literature, archival information and his unrivalled typographic memory, he not only managed to attribute a surprising number of these publications to a printer, but also could establish the period of time in which, as well as the places where, they must have been printed. These findings and the ways in which they were reached are described in the present collection of papers. Maar in de humoristische scènes werden ook kritische boodschappen verpakt. Deze gingen bijna altijd over wangedrag in het dagelijks leven: de pronkerige mode, het gesjoemel van advocaten, het hooghartig gedrag van meiden, de kwalijke gevolgen van kwaadsprekerij. Commentaar geven was gevaarlijk. Het publiek kon boos worden of weglopen en de autoriteiten konden een toneelstuk verbieden of een toneelschrijver straffen. Johanna Ferket onderzocht meer dan honderd zeventiende-eeuwse komische toneelstukken uit de Noordelijke en Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Ze laat zien dat de toneelschrijvers verschillende literaire strategieën gebruikten om de publieke opinie te beïnvloeden. Zelfs hoeren en dronkenlappen blijken dan soms de waarheid in pacht te hebben.
