Event-based control is a means to restrict the feedback in control loops to event time instants that are determined by a well-defined triggering mechanism. The aim of this control strategy is to adapt the communication over the feedback link to the system behavior. This book contributes to the growing work on scale-based formal semantic approaches to verbal phenomena. It presents a new scale-based framework for both aspectual classes and grammatical aspect with the aim of offering an analysis of achievements in the progressive. In order to analyse these, the temporal trace function is relativised to a granularity parameter, and the semantics of the progressive operator is assumed to involve partitivity over scales of change. To this end, a novel concept of a scale of change is adopted, building on a bottom-up idea of associating scales with events and characterising verbal predicates via event-level scales. As a crucial departure from former scale-based approaches, predicates like "arrive" are associated with both two-valued and multi-valued scales of change. The new framework can then capture fine-grained aspectual class differences and predict the interpretations of the progressive for different aspectual classes.
Using wireless sensor networks as part of pervasive computing scenarios is a difficult problem. It involves providing functionality and node behavior required by pervasive computing applications given the very limited capabilities and the constraints of wireless sensor nodes. The goal of this work is to investigate the problem of integrating wireless sensor nodes and wireless sensor networks in pervasive computing scenarios and to develop solutions that facilitate such an integration. Based on an analysis of both research areas, of their specific properties and requirements as well as the similarities and differences of the two fields, we identify and discuss a set of five fundamental problem areas that complicate the integration of sensor networks and pervasive computing: communication, network setup and configuration, user experience, security and flexibility and adaptability. In the main part of this work, we then introduce a total of six solution approaches that deal with different aspects of the identified problem areas.
The subject of this book is an epistemological consideration concerning the nature of knowledge. But other than the most essays on the subject of knowledge, here I am going to deal with a largely overlooked account to try to find an answer to the question of knowledge. This is the mental state account of knowledge. Or to put it into the main question: is knowledge a mental state? Now, the question is: Why is the epistemic thinking of Cook Wilson, Prichard and Austin afflicted with such ignorance in contemporary epistemic discussions? The answer is: an unreflected Platonian heritage during 2000 years of epistemic thinking - a notion which is similar to a point Hetherington has called "epistemic absolutism". So my main conclusion here is: the JTB thesis (knowledge is some aspect of justified true belief) is insufficient in order to give an account of the nature of knowledge. A consequence from this is: all the epistemic theories which are dealing with the JTB thesis are based on deficient assumptions. Hence their results - notably the well-known externalism/internalism debate - are insufficient, too. So, there is a need for a new theory of knowledge based on the MS thesis.
In this thesis, computational models of adaptive motor control and visuomotor coordination are explored and developed. These models relate to hypotheses on how sensorimotor processing in biological organisms might be organized at an abstract level; furthermore, these models and their specific implementations offer solutions for technical problems in the domain of adaptive robotics. The Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) and its generalization to variables of higher arities - constraint satisfaction problems (CSP) - can arguably be called the most "natural" of all NP-complete problems. The present work is concerned with their algorithmic treatment. It consists of two parts. The first part investigates CSPs for which satisfiability follows from the famous Lovasz Local Lemma. Discrete geometry has been among the fastest growing fields of mathematics in the last decades. One of the most fascinating objects studied in discrete geometry are k-sets. Not only are they extremely difficult to understand but they also play an important role in estimating the running time of several geometric algorithms. This thesis presents developments in three areas related to k-sets. First, it examines the circle containment problem of Urrutia and Neumann-Lara and reveals its relationships to geometric partitioning problems and centre regions. Next, it investigates k-sets in low dimensions and generalises the k-edge crossing identity of Andrzejak et al. to the sphere. Last, it studies conflict-free colourings of geometric hypergraphs and extends many results on this topic to more restrictive list colouring variants.
