This book situates the controversial Thatcher era in the political, social, cultural and economic history of modern Britain.
The bibliography contains references to literature on British industrial relations published in the years 1971 to 1979 inclusive. It includes books, periodical articles, theses, government publications, pamphlets and any other relevant publications. As well as general material on industrial relations, the bibliography includes material on employee attitudes and behaviour, employee organisation, employers and their organisation, collective bargaining, industrial conflict, industrial democracy, the labour market, training, employment, unemployment, labour mobility, pay, conditions and the role of the state in industrial relations. It is cross-referenced and has an author index. It is a supplement to the volume compiled by George Bain and Gillian Woolven (published by the Press in 1979) and for the years since 1980 is itself updated by annual articles in the British Journal of Industrial Relations. The material is arranged by subject, and chronologically within that framework.
This book explores two recent crises in British political economy: the crisis of 1976–9, for which the trade unions were impugned, and the 2007 economic crisis, for which bankers were (at least initially) blamed. The author argues that the “crisis resolution” of the former – principally the Thatcherite reforms of the 1980s – led to the emergence of the banking crisis. Further, Kirkland demonstrates how narratives of blame have emerged and were used in both instances to promote specific agendas. Narrations of blame and crises were used to curb the trade union powers in the 1980s, whilst the 2007 crisis was quickly reframed as one of excessive government spending, which in turn has led to policies of austerity.

In describing the life and times of the man, the authors provide a fascinating analysis of the developments in British architecture and planning from the 1930s to the 1970s. The book explains the story of a wartime policies for post-war reconstruction and examines policies which have had a major influence on the shaping of modern towns and cities. Holford’s involvement in planning in the post-war period shows how gradually the concept of ‘civic design’ has been discarded to the detriment of the urban landscape. His position in the thick of development conflicts, such as that of Piccadilly, have much to tell us about the workings of developers and planning authorities, and the failings of the planning system in the pressures for growth in the 1960s. In this key period of British architectural and planning history, Holford was a leading actor, and describing his role the book provides a very readable account of a little explored area.

Placing the clubs in the context of twentieth-century middle-class culture, Charles maintains that they represented the response of locally oriented, traditional middle-class men to societal changes. The groups emerged at a time when service was becoming both a middle-class and a business ideal. As voluntary associations, they represented a shift in organizing rationale, from fraternalism to service. The clubs and their ideology of service were welcome as a unifying force at a time when small cities and towns were beset by economic and population pressures.
