Logic, Everyday Discourse, and Metaphysics
This book applies the formal discipline of logic to everyday discourse. It offers a new analysis of the notion of individual, suggesting that this notion is linguistic, not ontological, and that anything denoted by a proper name in a well-functioning language game is an individual. It further posits that everyday discourse is non-compositional, i.e., its complex expressions are not just the result of putting simpler ones together but react on the latter, modifying their meaning through feedback. The book theorizes that in everyday discourse, there is no algebra of truth values, but the latter can be both input and output of something which has no truth value at all. It suggests that an elementary proposition of everyday discourse (defined as having exactly one predicate) can, in principle, be indefinitely expanded by adding new components, belonging neither to subject nor to predicate, but remain elementary. This book is of interest to logicians and philosophers of language.
From Arithmetic to Metaphysics
Published in honor of Sergio Galvan, this collection concentrates on the application of logical and mathematical methods for the study of central issues in formal philosophy. The volume is subdivided into four sections, dedicated to logic and philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, metaphysics and philosophy of religion. The contributions adress, from a logical point of view, some of the main topics in these areas. The first two sections include formal treatments of: truth and paradoxes; definitions by abstraction; the status of abstract objects, such as mathematical objects and universal concepts; and the structure of explicit knowledge. The last two sections include papers on classical problems in philosophy of science, such as the status of subjective probability, the notion of verisimilitude, the notion of approximation, and the theory of mind and mental causation, and specific issues in metaphysics and philosophy of religion, such as the ontology of species, actions, and intelligible worlds, and the logic of religious belonging.
Franz Joseph Gall
Franz Joseph Gall, a dedicated physician and scientist, is unfortunately most remembered for his controversial doctrine that would become known as phrenology. Although often portrayed as a discredited buffoon who believed he could assess a person's strengths and weaknesses by measuring cranial bumps, Gall strove to answer pressing questions about the mind, brain, and behavior. His career began in Vienna during the 1790s and ended with his death in Paris in 1828. This work presents a fresh look at Gall, both his life and seminal ideas, some of which--for example, cortical localization of function--would become tenets of modern behavioral neuroscience.
