MRI of the Heart and Vessels

MRI of the Heart and Vessels

In recent years magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has enriched the technological potential available for the characterization of cardiovascular pathologies, adding substantial advantages to other non-invasive techniques. This technique, which is intrinsically digital and has reduced operator dependency, allows the performance of image analysis in a quantitative and reproducible manner. The use of non-ionizing energy with the consequent absence of an environmental impact and of operator and patient biohazards makes MRI a winning technique when evaluating the risk – benefit ratio in comparison to other imaging methods. In virtue of its added diagnostic value and inherent refinements that allow construction of two- and three-dimensional images, MRI is gaining a primary role in the histopathological and physiopathological understanding of a large number of pathologies concerning the heart and vessels. This text is addressed both to MRI operators seeking specific technical information and to clinicians who wish to have a better understanding of the diagnostic and management advantages that MRI can offer.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third EAI International Conference on Smart Objects and Technologies for Social Good, GOODTECHS 2017, held in Pisa, Italy, November 29-30, 2017. The 38 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The papers reflect the design, implementation, deployment, operation and evaluation of smart objects and technologies for social good. A social good can be understood as a service that benefits a large number of people in a most possible way. Some classic examples are healthcare, safety, environment, democracy, and human rights, or even art, entertainment, and communication.

Case-based Atlas of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance

This book offers a practical guidance to healthcare professionals interested in learning how to make adequate clinically-oriented use of cardiovascular MRI. Thanks to its case-based approach, it provides a detailed guide to MRI applications in the most common clinical cardiovascular scenarios. Chapters describe a number of real clinical cases, including concise clinical data, clear descriptions of the most relevant information obtained from MRI and of their meaning in terms of patient management. Emphasis is placed on traditional as well as newer MRI techniques, always keeping a practical format, focused on the hands-on knowledge required for an accurate image interpretation. In the online version, the text of each case is supplemented with additional images and videos, certainly making this book a useful resource for understanding how MRI principles apply to real clinical cardiovascular situations.

Physico-theology

This first book-length study of physico-theology questions the widespread notion of a steadily advancing early modern separation of religion and science. Beginning around 1650, the emergence of a number of new scientific concepts, methods, and instruments challenged existing syntheses of science and religion. Physico-theology, which embraced the values of personal, empirical observation, was an international movement of the early Enlightenment that focused on the new science to make arguments about divine creation and providence. By reconciling the new science with Christianity across many denominations, physico-theology played a crucial role in diffusing new scientific ideas, assumptions, a...

European Physico-Theology (1650-C. 1760) in Context

Physico-theology celebrated the observation of nature as a way toward recognising God as Creator, demonstrating the compatibility of the biblical record with new science. This is an English-language monograph which studies the impact of physico-theology on the intellectual and socio-cultural establishment in Europe from the mid-17th century.--

The Quarrel over Swammerdam’s Posthumous Works reconstructs the vicissitudes of Johannes Swammerdam’s Biblia naturae, a pivotal collection of writings in the history of science. Bequeathed to the polymath Melchisédech Thévenot, the manuscripts and drawings of the treatises constituting this collection were instead kept by the editor Hermann Wingendorp after Swammerdam’s death (1680), triggering a quarrel over their publication. By analysing Swammerdam’s scientific legacy and by offering an edition of the correspondence testifying to the efforts towards such publication, this book sheds light on the editorial history and intellectual context of Swammerdam’s Biblia. This reveals not only an intricate plot of authorized and unauthorized attempts to publish it, but also an exchange of scientific texts and instruments in the late seventeenth century.
