Taurine
The underlying philosophy of these two symposia on taurine remains the same as all those that have been held previously: the best way to remain current in the subject matter is to talk directly with the investigators at the forefront of the field. Thus, we brought together some 50 individuals from 11 different countries who have keen interests and active research programs in the many-faceted areas of taurine research. Diet and Cancer
The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) sponsored its third annual confer ence on nutrition and cancer. The theme was "Diet and Cancer: Markers, Prevention, and Treatment. " The conference was held October 29-30, 1992 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in McLean, Virginia. This proceedings contains chapters from the platform presentations and abstracts from the poster presentations. Microbial Infections
This volume is based on the Proceedings of the International Conference on "Microbial Infections: Role of Biological Response Modifiers" held in Tampa, FL, May 29-31, 1991. The first symposium in this series was held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in December 1988 and was entitled "Novel Neutrophil Stimulating Peptides". That symposium successfully brought together the majority of laboratories working in the area of interleukin-8 and related peptides; see Immunology Today 10: 146-147 (1989). Before 1850, the field of medicine was almost completely closed to women. In 1850, a group of radical reformist male Quaker physicians and associates founded the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania to offer formal medical training to women. By the 1890s, under the guidance of a series of pioneering women deans, the school grew into a progressive medical collegem re-named the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC). This development occurred despite the stubborn and at times near violent opposition of most of the male medical community of Philadelphia.
