June 22nd, 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush arrival at Tilbury Docks carrying Caribbean workers to help rebuild Britain after World War II. `Style In My DNA' by Jamaican born fashion designer Lorna Holder chronicles 70 years of different fashion trends within the British Caribbean community and the influence it had on the overarching British fashion industry. The book includes exclusive and never before seen fashion photography, illustrations and analysis of Caribbean people in Britain from the late forties and continues right up to the present day. Also included are the memoirs of Lorna Holder, a child of the Windrush generation, who went on to become the first black graduate in fashion to pass through the then Nottingham Trent Polytechnic, a successful fashion designer, producer, author, curator and active figure within London's Caribbean Community. To bear witness to the fundamental ways Caribbean culture and fashion have shaped the UK and beyond, is to ensure that the significant contributions made throughout the years, will never be forgotten.

Design, Displacement, Migration

  • Categories: Art

Design, Displacement, Migration: Spatial and Material Histories gathers a collection of scholarly and creative voices—spanning design, art, and architectural history; design studies; curation; poetry; activism; and social sciences––to interrogate the intersections of design and displacement. The contributors foreground objects, spaces, visual, and material practices and consider design’s role in the empire, the state, and various colonizing regimes in controlling the mass movement of people, things, and ideas across borders, as well as in social acts that resist forced mobility and immobility, or enact new possibilities. By consciously surfacing echoes, rhymes, and dissonances among ...

Gentleman Jim

The remarkable story of Jim Almonds, his WWII experiences, and his formative role in the birth of the SAS. Set in wartime England, the western desert, Italy, and France, this book captures the spirit of the young soldiers in the newly emerging Special Air Service, against a dramatic background of love, courage, and high-risk adventure. Jim Almonds, a sergeant in the Guards Commandos, sailed for the Middle East as part of “Layforce” in January 1941, with David Stirling and others destined to become SAS L Detachment “originals.” Following intensive training in the desert and action at Tobruk, Sidi Haneish, Nofelia, and Benghazi, Almonds was captured and shipped to a POW camp in Italy, where he staged two escapes. After thirty-two days on the run in enemy territory, he reached US forces at the Benevento front line. Later, he parachuted into occupied France, where he harried the Germans so effectively that he was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Written by Gentleman Jim’s daughter and based on Almond’s own diaries, various primary sources, and interviews with other originals, this is a story about an extraordinary man, filled with vivid and immediate action.
