Concrete Inferno
After a coup in 1964 that ousted Brazil’s leftist President João Goulart from power, a brutal military dictatorship took the reins of the state. As a result, elements of the persecuted Brazilian Communist Party split from a more peaceful, orthodox line and declared their intent to wage an insurgent war against the government, plunging the country into a conflagration of violence marked by cycles of urban bombings, political assassinations, institutional torture, kidnappings, and summary executions. Concrete Inferno relays this period in Brazil in a lucid narrative history, exploring what drove the military coup of 1964, the subsequent rise of the Armed Left, and the successes and failures of the insurgency and how it concluded. Stretching from the rumblings of discontent during João Goulart’s ascendancy in 1961 to the strange conclusion of the dictatorship in 1985, the book draws on new primary sources and a wealth of English- and Portuguese-language resources to provide a complete and evenhanded portrait of the conflict.

O livro é fundamentado nas categorias de ditadura, memória, violência e silenciamento. Os artigos presentes na publicação expressam questões epistemológicas e historiográficas que discutem o caráter dos regimes autoritários e suas influências na organização de políticas de memórias que definem o presente. Na primeira parte da obra, são enfatizados os trabalhos que dialogam mais diretamente com as relações entre memória e história, levando em consideração de que a história só poderá ser compreendida a partir do entendimento dessa dinâmica. Na segunda parte, foram reunidos os artigos que tratam diretamente da ditadura civil-militar brasileira e abordam seus aspectos políticos, econômicos e sociais. A terceira e última parte compreendem os artigos que tratam das realidades do Nordeste e, em particular, da Bahia, envolvendo redes repressivas e memórias resistentes de combate ao regime ao longo dos seus 21 anos.

O livro é uma coletânea composta por dez textos escritos por historiadores de diversas regiões do Brasil, todos vinculados a universidades públicas, na condição de professores ou na condição de alunos de pós-graduação. De alguma forma, todos os textos se debruçam sobre aquela que é a questão estrutural do livro: as relações entre a historiografia e a atmosfera de crise política. A coletânea está dividida em duas partes: primeiro, os textos que se debruçam sobre os dilemas recentes da história política brasileira, entre a ditadura militar (1965-1985) e o colapso institucional do regime político que durante muito chamamos de “Nova República” (1988-2016). Em seguida, vêm os textos que tratam das tensões, negociações e conflitos que atravessaram a história brasileira nos últimos 130 anos.
