Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications 2010

The automobile of the future has to meet two primary requirements: the super-efficient use of energy and power and the ultra-safe transportation of people and goods. Both features are increasingly enabled by smart, adaptive and context aware information and communication technologies (ICT), elect- cal or electronic components and systems rather than solely by the mecha- cal means of classic automotive engineering. The most advanced example of this trend is the electrified vehicle combining a full electric powertrain with completely electronic controls like smart power and energy managers, ste- by-wire technologies and intelligent networking capabilities allowing all p- viders and consumers o...

Investigation of Reliability Aspects of Power Semiconductors in Photovoltaic Central Inverters for Sunbelt Regions

High reliability and system lifetimes in the range of 30 years are essential for renewable energy systems such as photovoltaic power plants to minimise costs for the generated electric energy. At the same time such systems are used in regions with high solar irradiance and also harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, designs for photovoltaic inverters need to meet not only the key design criteria of high conversion efficiency but also need to be very robust and at the same time meet challenging cost targets. In this dissertation aspects concerning the lifetime and reliability of power semiconductors in photovoltaic central inverters are investigated. On key topic of the dissertation is the measurement of the voltage dependent failure rate due to cosmic radiation induced single-event-burnout of SiC and Si power semiconductors. The second topic is the development of a system level simulation to quantify the stress on the power semiconductors in a PV central inverters in various regions of the world. Further topics are the investigation of improved control concepts for the cooling system of PV central inverters and the monitoring of IGBT temperatures during converter operation.

Intelligent Transport Systems, From Research and Development to the Market Uptake

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Intelligent Transport Systems, INTSYS 2020, which was held in December 2020. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. With the globalization of trade and transportation and the consequent multi-modal solutions used, additional challenges are faced by organizations and countries. Intelligent Transport Systems make transport safer, more efficient, and more sustainable by applying information and communication technologies to all transportation modes. The 16 revised full papers in this book were selected from 38 submissions and are organized in three thematic sessions on mobility; applications; simulation and prediction.

Investigation on Performance Advantage of Functionally Integrated Magnetic Components in Decentralised Power Electronic Applications

The functional integration of magnetic components is a known technique in order to enable high power densities for power electronic converters. Magnetic components are mandatory in many power electronic converters and many topologies demand more than one magnetic component. Therefore, the functional integration of magnetic components allows realising several magnetic functions within one component. This technique promises lower total size, losses and costs without switching frequency increase. There are several examples in the literature for coupled inductors, common-differential-mode chokes or transformer-inductor components. One centralised question of this work is to explore the performan...

Analysis and Comparison of Power Electronic Converters with Electronic Isolation

With the continual increase in the global energy consumption, grows the demand on the power capacity, efficient production, distribution and utilization of the electrical energy generated. The role of power electronics in such contexts has been of great importance not only for the traditional power generator systems but also for the decentralized renewable energy generation, like solar and wind power. Several innovations can be observed in the field of power systems for renewable energy sources based on power electronics. Improvements can be identified regarding for example control techniques, semiconductor devices, electromagnetic components and also topologies. Such developments allow spec...

Discrete time sliding mode control strategies applied to a multiphase brushless DC machine

Nowadays, environmental issues motivates the replacement of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic system by electrical system in the transport sector aiming to reduce emissions generated by burning of fossil fuels in vehicles. The electrical system must ensure high electrical efficiency and should not exceed the weight of the substituted components. To attend these high performance requirements a fault-tolerant multiphase brushless DC machine was chosen for this research. The present work introduces a six-phase 600W brushless DC machine with 8 poles. The main challenge for the control issues of this machine is the mutual magnetic coupling between the phases due to the wave winding machine configuration. In this context, theoretical and practical investigations of different current control strategies based on the sliding mode control approach applied to the six-phase brushless DC machine are presented.

Algorithm Concept for Crash Detection in Passenger Cars

State-of-the-art airbag algorithms make a decision to fire restraint systems in a crash by evaluating the deceleration of the entire vehicle during the single events of the accident. In order to meet the ever increasing requirements of consumer test organizations and global legislators, a detailed knowledge of the nature and direction of the crash would be of great benefit. The algorithms used in current vehicles can only do this to a limited extent. André Leschke presents a completely different algorithm concept to solve these problems. In addition to vehicle deceleration, the chronological sequence of an accident and the associated local and temporal destruction of the vehicle are possible indicators for an accident’s severity. About the Author: Dr. André Leschke has earned his doctoral degree from Tor-Vergata University of Rome, Italy. Currently, he is working as head of a team of vehicle safety developers in the German automotive industry.
