The J. Paul Getty Museum Journal 15 is a compendium of articles and notes pertaining to the Museum's permanent collections of antiquities, decorative arts, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, photographs, and sculpture and works of art. This volume includes a supplement introduced by John Walsh with a fully illustrated checklist of the Getty’s recent acquisitions. Volume 15 includes articles written by Jeffery Spier, Michael Pfrommer, Cornelius C. Vermeule, Maureen Cassidy-Geiger, Robert S. Nelson, Carl Brandon Stehlke, Peter Sutton, John T. The Shining Inheritance
During Qing dynasty China, Italian artists were hired through Jesuit missionaries by the imperial workshops in Beijing. In The Shining Inheritance: Italian Painters at the Qing Court, 1699–1812, Marco Musillo considers the professional adaptations and pictorial modifications to Chinese traditions that allowed three of these Italian painters — Giovanni Gherardini (1655– ca. 1729), Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), and Giuseppe Panzi (1734–1812) — to work within the Chinese cultural sphere from 1699, when Gherardini arrived in China, to 1812, the year of Panzi’s death. The collection of drawings at the Getty Museum was started in 1981 with the purchase of Rembrandt’s Nude Woman with a Snake and has steadily expanded since then, so that now, at the turn of the new millennium, it stands at more than six hundred drawings and is, sheet for sheet, one of the best anywhere.
